Announcement icon I am offering tele-therapy via Zoom for individuals and couples throughout the COVID-19 shutdown.
Dedicated to helping my clients transform their lives, I create a warm, engaging space to resolve current life challenges while also grappling with long-term emotional issues that may underpin larger problems, such as anxiety or depression. I am collaborative, combining talk therapy with behavioral and cognitive techniques in individual, group and couples sessions. With over 30 years experience, I’m friendly yet direct, empathetic as well as challenging. I work with corporate and nonprofit leaders and professionals from around the world: women, men, gays, lesbians, straights, late 20's+, interracial couples and adoptive parents.
Together we tackle a variety of issues: family crises and complicated relationships as well as shifting careers -- layoffs, promotions, relocations. We develop greater self-esteem and more fulfilling relationships. Therapy is an investment in the quality of life today, tomorrow and throughout a lifetime.
A past president of American Academy of Psychotherapists, I am honored to have been chosen by my peers for inclusion in the Washingtonian magazine’s Best Therapist issue twice: in 2008 for my work with gay men and lesbians, and in 2012 for my expertise in couples therapy. Six weekly, ongoing groups during the mornings, afternoons and evenings.

Gordon Cohen's Groups

Adult Group Therapy

Group therapy is a cornerstone of my work. It can be an important component in a client's therapeutic journey. I lead general psychotherapy groups for adults, as well as those specifically for gay men. Our sessions are dynamic, experiential and based on state-of-the-art group therapy theory, research and practices. Limited to eight members, our groups are made up of women and men who reflect the sophisticated, multi-racial and international community that is Washington, D.C. Members are single, married and divorced. During weekly, 75-minute meetings, participants grow to know one another well in this close, supportive and confidential experience.

Group Therapy for Gay Men

Working with gay men has been a passion of mine since 1992 when I co-founded the Affirmative Psychotherapy Group to serve this community. I offer groups on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at varying times. Group members continue psychotherapy but in a group context. This is an opportunity for gay men to speak with one another about their lives. They come to know one another over a long period of time and become deeply involved in each others lives. There is no outside contact between members, which allows the work to develop within a community of like-minded men in a supportive, safe and confidential setting.
