I do therapy backwards. I help people first find acceptance of what's challenging them, and focus on making that feeling of discomfort feel safe. I believe that allowing the experience of the full range of human emotions is key to reclaiming and strengthening our emotional resiliency. We can accept the presence of discomfort and feel joy, while identifying and making changes based on who we want to be or know we are. My therapy practice is based in an understanding of the nervous system, mindfulness, and the ways we all experience and react to trauma and distress.

Finding a place we can trust to tell our stories is essential to finding a path to healing, recovery, and transformation. Therefore, it is essential to find someone that can help you reach your potential to transform your life. We all are born with an innate capacity to develop happy and healthy lives. However, sometimes life experiences such as hurts and traumas can interfere with our development and we may become unhappy or unsatisfied with our lives and adopt self-defeating thinking and behavioral patterns.

How are you looking to grow, change, or expand your awareness of yourself and your relationships? My work is to support and challenge; providing you with space to explore your self and connections to others, understand the story you create around your experience, and recognize patterns in your life from a foundation of support. Together, we investigate the ways you relate to others, the ties in your history that inform where you are now, and how we can facilitate healing from pain-whether that pain looks like depression, anxiety, trauma, sexual dysfunction, or discomfort in your relationships.

Beneath all of our disappointments, losses, and heartbreaks, we all want to be valued for who we are, accepted for how we feel, and respected for what we think. I will encourage you to cultivate present moment awareness and self-compassion for the painful difficulties, challenging life circumstances, and to the inner narrative that keeps you stuck in habitual patterns of reacting. While fear and doubt may obscure your perspective, we will work together to help you develop strength-based skills and capacities for moving through challenges. I will help you access your inner wisdom for cultivating trust, balance, clarity, & connection.

While therapy is meant to foster growth and personal reflection, I strongly believe that therapy should also cultivate exploration, creativity, curiosity and a sense of empowerment. As a queer woman of color, I cherish environments that affirm and celebrate who I am in all of my complexities. I treasure relationships where I do not have to explain myself or my experiences. Unfortunately, these environments and these relationships can be hard to find, making us feel a pressure to deny parts of ourselves in order to be accepted or seen by others.

Gestalt Therapists
What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.
How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.
How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.
Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
