Hello, I'm Dr. Stephanie. My therapeutic style can be summed up in three words: engaging, non-judgmental, and compassionate. With a background in both psychoanalysis and cognitive behavioral therapy, I believe in using these approaches interchangeably to provide quality and in depth therapy to my clients. I firmly believe that success in therapy is grounded in these two approaches, where the goal is for you to understand how your thoughts impact your feelings, and how your feelings, in turn, impact your behavior. I look forward to working together and supporting you on your journey.

My ideal client is an individual adult, or couple in a relationship, having problems they want to resolve. I don't choose my clients. They choose me. With over 50 years of experience as a clinical psychologist, I love what I do as much or more than when I began my career. I am not a "how does that make you feel" kind of therapist. I will challenge, confront and engage when appropriate if I feel doing so will aid getting you to where you said you wanted to go in our goal-oriented therapy. My wife and I also do couples therapy together. I offer a free initial 15 min. phone call to answer questions.

Many of my clients are high-functioning adults who appear “fine” on the outside while privately struggling with anxiety, trauma, addiction, emotional exhaustion, perfectionism, or deep self-criticism. They may feel stuck in unhealthy patterns, overwhelmed by stress, disconnected from themselves, or exhausted from constantly trying to hold everything together. Therapy offers a space to slow down, gain insight, and begin healing without judgment. My approach is compassionate, honest, and collaborative, helping clients feel more grounded, connected, and empowered moving forward.

Are you the Family Hero? Starting therapy can be hard, particularly for those who are not accustomed to seeking support. Recognizing the need for help can feel daunting, as it might seem to challenge the roles you've long upheld—perhaps as the family's hero, the fixer, or the helper. There might be a fear that your vulnerabilities will become apparent in reaching out, questioning the identity you've consistently portrayed. However, it is crucial to embrace a pivotal truth: showing vulnerability is not a sign of weakness, but a profound act of bravery. Asking for help is a courageous step. Therapy is transformative self-discovery.

Narcissistic-codependent toxic dynamics are in religions, jobs, intimate partners, friendships, and parenting.
Trauma can be a one-time event or a long-time betrayal, or a childhood of neglect, or repetitive psychological, verbal, physical, sexual, or religious abuse, often by people we most trust. What fears keep you stuck? What boundaries can't you enforce? Why can't you say "no"? Understanding leads to healing, freedom from the addictive grip of the cycle.

You're lying in bed awake. You and your partner have had one circular argument too many, and you're exhausted from the emotional gridlock. Meeting the demands of work, parenting, and aging in-laws is even harder when your marriage is struggling. The good news? Finding the right therapist can help. In fact, most chronically distressed couples need outside help to resolve the problem dynamics that operate beneath the surface of daily life. High-achieving professional couples, many with children, seek me out because I help them understand what's really going on - I give them answers that make sense and action steps that work.

I specialize in narcissistic abuse and complex trauma.
Serving TN, NC, and GA. You've been in a cycle of toxic relationships that make you feel crazy and not good enough. You wonder, "am I the narcissist?" Maybe you've tried to set boundaries with a parent, but still feel misunderstood, criticized, or invalidated. You believe your childhood was difficult but then rationalize that it "wasn't that bad." You won't call it trauma or abuse but then what was it?

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Therapists
What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.

How do therapists treat NPD?
By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.

Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?
Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.

How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?
It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
