In the therapeutic process, my core belief is that everyone should feel a sense of trust and respect, with the autonomy to make their own decisions. Thus, my role is to empower and enable my clients to achieve their goals in improving their quality of life. The process can be difficult and disheartening, but the path is far from impossible to forge. My practice integrates empirical research and clinical interventions through a person-centered approach. From this perspective, the client and therapist create a collaborative atmosphere of trust and respect that envisions the client’s best possible treatment trajectory.

I have over ten years of experience working with teens and adults under 50. Most of my clients, both male and female, are in some form of transition in their lives. These transitions present themselves as maturation struggles, changing relationships, questioning perspectives, contemplating choices, and finding difficulty with what currently faces them in their lives. These are the times when a trusted assistant is helpful. My clients need to know that they have a safe place, without judgement, to work through their struggles. I provide trust, support, education, and new skills training with each client.

I feel humbled when collaborating with clients, understanding that we are all going through something. It takes courage and vulnerability to reach out when you are struggling with life's challenges. Emotions can be difficult to feel and work through alone. I work with adolescents and adults in the areas of depression, anxiety, grief and loss, coping with chronic illness, relationship problems, and parenting, to name a few. Some of our focus will be practicing being in the moment, challenging any distorted thoughts, and creating a new narrative of how we view ourselves.

After struggling through my formative years with no therapeutic support, I became the person I wish that I had at that age: someone who would see and accept me as I am while supporting me to make the things that I wanted to be better. I work with neurodivergent adults, am LGBTQIA+ affirming, and work well with neurodiverse folx aged 13-35 addressing depression, anxiety, stress, self-esteem, goal-setting, and life transition issues. If you have something in your life that you would like to improve, I'm here to help you do it. I will love and accept you for who you are while supporting you to make the changes you would like.

My name is Erika Johnson, I am a licensed clinical mental health counseling associate. My goal as a therapist is to provide a safe, accepting, and genuine space to talk. Every person I see has unique vulnerabilities, experiences, hidden personal strengths and struggles. In a world full of constant change, it is easy to get overwhelmed and feel lost. I hope to help individuals rediscover who they are and live in the present without constant fear of the future and reliving their past. When coming to see me there will be no judgment. Counseling should be a place where you can be yourself without feeling judged.

Anxiety. Addiction. Trauma. Does your mind race and you feel out of control? Is it nearly impossible to concentrate at work and by the time you get home, you are so exhausted that it's difficult to even get dinner on the table or help the kids with homework? You've been pulling back at work, distancing from friends, and feel 'checked-out' around family. The only thing that seems to bring you some peace, let alone sleep, is a bottle of wine, hours of Netflix, or chocolate cake.

I view counseling as a way to better externalize how things interact with your mind, body and wellbeing. I strongly focus on how Attachment within our family systems imprints on who we are and how we interact with the world around us and the people we love. I try to work within the space in which you are ready and eliminate the power dynamic that sometimes can be present when feeling the need for help. I feel that therapy can be empowering and incredibly clarifying as you navigate your intrinsic motivation and self worth.

Take a moment before you read this, and let it sink in that just by being here, you have already taken a step towards improving your mental health. Believe that you are worthy and capable of doing that work. Therapy can be a place to increase your own understanding of yourself, identify patterns, and attend to the places that need healing. Sometimes it is difficult to hold ourselves with compassion, tune in to our own needs, and engage meaningfully with the people and world around us. In therapy, we can discover together what a vibrant and healthy life looks like for you, and how you will best be supported on that road.

Resolved Counseling offers intensive marriage counseling from married counselors. Our unique co-counseling approach offers you and your spouse individual counseling and couples coaching in 2-hour sessions. Many couples are stuck in a repeating pattern of conflict, re-enacting the same role and arguing about the same thing over and over again. Once this pattern becomes established it gets harder and harder to break. This is because of almost universal human flaws that play out in relationships: the blame game, fear of rejection, desire to be right and win, and ingrained roles & rules that create the very problem we wish to solve.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Spokane?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
