Being unapologetically black and queer, I am constantly aware of oppression fatigue, and its effects on our emotional and physical well being My hope is to help others achieve awareness, healing, recovery, and resistance.
“Self-care is the constant practice of not letting more pain accumulate.” -Susan Raffo. I have a special interest in the wellness and wholeness of QTPOC, and helping each person uncover the underlying foundations of their discomforts. I believe in treating the intersections of the mind, body, and spirit. Listening, witnessing, empathizing, and being present are tenets of my therapeutic framework.

I have a background with recovery, LGBTQ+ identity development, and grief & loss.
You’ve made a courageous step in seeking therapy. Therapy can help us heal and grow, through deep listening and presence. Early life shapes how we create our sense of self, learn boundaries, and tend to feelings. We can decide now how we want to show up for ourselves and others, uncovering skills and beliefs that no longer serve us.

I have worked with all challenges including; bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, schizoaffective disorder, LGBTQ, narcissistic disorders, etc.
My name is Brad Klemm, LMSW and I have been working as a Psychotherapist since 2001. I graduated from University of Michigan's School of Social Work with a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work. I then received postgraduate training through the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute for adult and adolescent psychotherapy. I primarily use a psychodynamic approach in my work. This means I view your current symptoms as the result of past and present issues coming together. Once we understand this interplay, you will be able to control your symptoms, rather than feeling your symptoms are controlling you.

Are you part of the LGBTQ+ community, feeling isolated and like no one understands you? Are you struggling with feelings of anxiety, depression, or finding difficulty relating with family and friends? Are you discovering your identity and navigating personal and emotional challenges that come with that process? It can be very difficult to feel connected to loved ones if they don’t understand every part of you, and the emotions that follow can be hard to navigate alone. I can work with you and provide you the support you need to cope with your emotions; to understand and value your identity; and transition into living authentically.

I enjoy working with other therapists, veterans, and the LGBTQIA+ community.
My ideal client hasn't had things be super easy for them. Working together using holistic somatic approaches like Brainspotting and EMDR I want to provide you with a safe, affirming and non-judgmental space for you to heal and grow from harmful life experiences. Collaboratively we can work toward your goals using trauma informed interventions in individual counseling sessions.

With a curious, collaborative, warm, and direct perspective, I help LGBTQIA+ adults working through trauma, anxiety, stress, depression, and identity exploration. Everyone has a unique story, perspective, and experience. Sometimes it helps to have someone walk with us to explore our identity, work through life challenges or traumas, and to find fulfillment. What do you want to do in your life? Where do you want to go? How do you want to be true to yourself? I have some maps to suggest, but you have the power to choose the one best for you.

If you are LGBTQ+, you may be feeling lost and struggling to find someone who “gets” you. As a queer transgender man, I have a unique perspective into the challenges of navigating our world, and I feel empowered to support folks who are exploring what it means to live as their authentic selves. I’m invested in supporting folks at any age who are like us. I encourage you to bring anything into our sessions so we can process things together. All vibes are welcome with me: if you’re having a particularly difficult day, if you’re nervous about starting therapy, if you feel like you should be able to handle this on you own.

I'm LGBTQIA+, Kink, and PolyAm informed and aware.
After our first session, most of my clients express feeling relief and hope. Later in therapy, they tell me that sessions have changed their lives in surprising ways, and that they have learned things about themselves they didn't know before. It's very important to me that therapy is useful and helpful. During our first session, we'll explore your goals and needs in therapy, and how you would like to feel better. At the end of our first hour together, you'll have someone on your side to help, and a plan to move forward. I look forward to connecting with you soon!

I specialize in working with young adults, women, Jews, LGBTQIA, Latino/as, and highly empathic people.
Did you know that the quality of a therapeutic relationship is a better predictor of clinical success rather than therapy style? I place particular emphasis on fostering that relationship while helping clients work toward their goals. In essence, we are a team trying to get you closer to where you want to be. I aspire to be your best advocate (second to yourself, of course), and whenever needed, a cheerleader. Most of my caseload is made up of long-term clients who choose to continue treatment for reasons such as: continual insight, healing, growth, and in some cases a way to guarantee regular accountability and self-introspection.

I have a lifelong interest in collaborating with people who want to grow toward healthier relationships, optimum expression of life purpose, and balancing aspects of Self. Together, we build a space for curiosity about self, beginning where you are, and proceeding at your pace. I see a wide range of people including trauma survivors, artists, and LGBTQ+ folx. I have a general practice, and I specialize in trauma and dissociation. I love helping people through life transition. I don't treat substance abuse. I believe daily pot use stifles growth/change capacity, so I have found that therapy is not very useful until you have quit.

I have a passion for working with individuals looking to escape the yo-yo dieting cycle, learn about the many negatives of diet culture, and finally find body and food acceptance. As someone who is neurodiverse, I have a deep connection to various neurodiverse communities and firmly believe in understanding neurodiversity as a natural variation rather than a “disorder”. I also draw upon principles from WPATH and stand firm in my commitment to the LGBTQIA+, HAES, and ENM/poly communities. Growing up in a rural area in the thumb of Michigan taught me about the power of community and human connection, which I always bring to sessions!

I have been trained to work with youth who identify as members of the LGBTQ community and their families.
Life is full of surprises. No matter how much you prepare and plan, unexpected events may occur. I believe that therapy is an essential tool to help prepare you to cope with the unexpected as well as the stressors of everyday life. I am passionate about normalizing therapy by educating people on the benefits and necessity of having an unbiased listening ear to help work through life events. I strive to provide a comfortable environment where clients feel safe to share their most vulnerable thoughts and ideas. I will work as an advocate to help my clients become empowered in their ability to cope with whatever life throws at them.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
