Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you try, you are unable to see yourself as more than a body? That diet culture is so deeply engrained in our society that it feels impossible to escape? You are not alone. We live in a world that has convinced us that pursuing an unrealistic thin ideal is the key to happiness. That if we "work hard enough," that void we constantly feel, will eventually go away. That's why my goal is to help you reach a place of acceptance so that you can experience a more fulfilling life, free from diet culture and the toxicity that ensues.

I keep getting interviews but I’m not getting the job. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. When I ask for feedback, I don’t get much of an answer. I need someone who can tell me how I’m coming across in the interview because I’ve gotten jobs in the past that weren’t a great fit. I also need to be more clear about what I want in a job. Instead of helping the employer understand what I motivates me and what I enjoy doing, I try to guess the type of employee they are seeking so that I will get the job. This may explain the reason I haven’t been very happy in my past roles.

You’ve got it all. The creative job, the perfectly decorated apartment, the boyfriend, the besties. All the things on the checklist you made beck in high school of the factors to tell you when you made it. So...you made it! But…why hasn't that overwhelming sense of dread gone away? Or that awful knot in your stomach? The anxiety and stress that used to push you towards excellence in school now feels like it's floating with nowhere to go. You feel like a failure, despite your objective successes, and you’re scared of what people will say if you change your path now, but even more afraid of what will happen if you don’t.

It can be difficult to admit when we are struggling. In a world that can be harsh and unforgiving, we may learn to believe that showing vulnerability means we are weak. That if we share our fears and anxieties with others, we are burdening them or giving them ammunition to use against us in the future. These are all common beliefs held by some when I first see them. Asking for help is not easy. I want you to know that while it may not feel like it, the fact that you are reading this right now is evidence of strength, not weakness. It proves you are working to better your life. Together, we will make sure you achieve that!

Being human means experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, transitions in life, grief, pain, even fear, uncertainty, trauma, and doubt at some point. We can go from living our lives to being overwhelmed by our experiences, which can bring shame, anger, frustration, or self-loathing. When faced with these issues, the overwhelming need for a safe, encouraging, supportive space and acquiring access to tools that will help us navigate and better understand our mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical selves becomes essential for getting unstuck and moving forward.

Do you feel beaten down by the constant demands of your life, desperately trying to please your partner, family and/or everyone else? Do you find yourself questioning “what is the point of it all?" or that you were "meant for something more?" If so, I know exactly what that feels like. When we experienced pain, suffering, stress and/or trauma we learn to disconnect from the core parts of ourselves as a form of protection. As a result, we become stuck in a constant state of anxiety, perfectionism, people pleasing as an attempt to reclaim wholeness in our life.

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul." (Psalm 94:19) There are times in our life when obstacles from our past or circumstances from the present can cause emotional and spiritual unrest. The unrest, if persistent can negatively impact the educational, social and professional aspects of a person's life.

When life presents us with challenges, we may find that the people or strategies we've leaned on in the past no longer help us. This can leave us feeling confused, anxious, upset, or off balance. Therapy is a collaborative process that can help us better understand ourselves and find ways of coping with or adapting to our circumstances. Whether therapy is the first or last thing you’re trying after deciding that something needs to change, I want to commend you for taking steps to care for your well-being.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
