I am a cis-gendered, white, queer identified clinician with latin american roots and I find it important to come from a place of cultural humility.
Sometimes we can find ourselves feeling stuck, overwhelmed and unsure about how to move forward. Therapy can be a good space to start. The intersections of society, identity and family can profoundly shape where we find ourselves. I compassionately support clients explore current challenges and how formative experiences and trauma may have played a role– in order to facilitate a new awareness and discover their power to tap into desired changes.

At times it may seem as if we're at odds with our mind. The thoughts and feelings we experience seem overwhelming. We can convince ourselves we're undeserving of contentment, love, happiness, success, acceptance, etc. Where does that come from and why is it so easy to believe? For those of us in the LGBTQIA+ community, there are added layers we need to work through, making it difficult for us to thrive. Therapy can play a meaningful role by providing a space to work through the layers, confront our hurtful thoughts and feelings, unburden ourselves of the past, and truly learn to thrive.

Inclusivity, antiracism, and LGBTQ+ competency are fundamental to the way I work.
The way I see it, the goal of therapy is to bolster you so that you can maneuver whatever life brings your way. Depression, anxiety, and trauma all block our capacity to experience the wide range of emotions that give life it's vitality. As your therapist, I will be a secure and safe support as we explore patterns in your emotions and relationships, I will encourage you to experience life in a present-focused and embodied manner, and I will help to foster the growth of your natural strengths and resiliencies. Ultimately, I want to help my clients to reclaim their unique identity and to become better friends to themselves.

Society places an incredible amount of pressure on us, specifically racial/ethnic minorities, LGBTQ persons, and persons with disabilities. As you explore and develop your identity, you may experience distress and symptoms that make it difficult to accomplish your goals and live authentically. A closer examination of your coping strategies can help you learn how to best take care of YOU.

My goal as a therapist is to create a supportive environment for folks to explore their gender and sexuality. Perhaps you identify as queer, bisexual, lesbian, gay, pansexual, asexual, trans, nonbinary, agender, poly, kinky, something else, everything, and/or nothing at all. You deserve to have a space where you can learn more about the different parts of yourself without judgment. As a queer person who has sought out therapy myself, I know how challenging it can be to find an affirming therapist. Even if your identity isn’t central to your therapeutic goals, know that every part of you will be welcome in our work.

I work with all types of clients (couples, children, individuals) but especially marginalized groups (especially LGBTQ+) who need a place to feel comfortable, accepted, understood and respected. A place where feelings are valued, validated and matter. You may have been displaced, made to feel wrong, unaccepted and unwelcome. You want a safe space where you can express yourself freely and not be judged as society and others may have judged you. A place where you can be heard and work on feeling proud and wonderful with who you are and process negative experiences so you can be fully your authentic self and enjoy a fulfilling life.

I have worked with individuals suffering from depression, trauma, substance use and other addictions, anxiety, adjustment issues, grief & loss, sexual abuse, and LGBTQ issues.
As a licensed mental health counselor, my approach is warm, friendly, and client-centered. I believe that the relationship between the client and the therapist is the most important part of the therapeutic journey. I pride myself on being able to get a good sense of my clients and who they are individually in order to develop a strong therapeutic alliance. I am empathic and validating, but I am also skilled in challenging unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that may be getting in the way of living one's best life.

While I've supported a wide range of clients, my time at SLC has helped me hone my skill set with undergraduate and graduate students, athletes, members of the queer- and trans communities, and performing artists.
College students returning home, visiting artists, and anyone else spending this summer in New York State - laws prohibit many therapists from working with their clients across state lines. Yet most summer transplants don't shed their concerns when they leave one state and enter another. To manage this void, it's important that clients find a local mental health clinician who understands how to be useful in an abbreviated time frame. If you're looking for support from June through August, my experience on the mental health team at Sarah Lawrence College has shown me short-term therapy has its benefits.

I help people feel better and improve their lives with psychotherapy and music therapy. If you are suffering from anxiety, depression, addiction or everyday stress with relationships, work or family. If you want a fluid and creative approach to therapy that helps you go deep to the core of your issues, I can help. I am particularly passionate about working with those who identify as LGBTQIA+, especially trans and GNC folx. In a world full of stigma, with so much pressure to conform to a heteronormative society, being trans or GNC can be an isolating and scary experience. I can help you on your journey to become your true self.

My background involves work with LGBTQ+ and heterosexual folks, with people exploring their gender and sexuality, life transitions, patterns of self-sabotage, and professional satisfaction.
Schedule a free consultation easily using this link: calendly.com/brian-ackerman-lmsw/consult. Life would be so much easier without uncomfortable feelings, painful experiences, and inner turmoil, but here we are. As humans, we are the universe getting to know itself, in all our joy and pain. In my practice, I aim to accompany you, using a trauma-informed lens and psychoanalytic approach to explore your unconscious, on your journey inward. I believe each of us has so much to learn and teach from our experiences and perspectives if we can give ourselves the space and self-compassion to process them.

I also have experience working with LGBTQ+ populations, as well as racial and ethnic minority groups - particularly those who have been socialized in bicultural or multicultural settings.
There’s nothing I find more gratifying than helping my clients redefining purpose in their lives. While we are in a constant struggle with the expectations of others, we often lose sight of who we are ourselves. We negotiate, toil, and sacrifice—sometimes without even knowing why. That’s why as a counselor, I specialize in navigating conflict and transitions within careers, relationships, and self-esteem to help clients regain ownership and rediscover meaning in life.

As an immigrant Asian non-binary person (pronouns: they/them), I have years of experience doing research and advocating for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ rights and social justice.
Need a space to care for yourself and tend to your own needs? I welcome you. Healing through therapy, although sometimes stigmatized, is an experience that most of us need in the current world. Our lives have been disrupted by unexpected and devastating events, which intensifies our stress, anxiety and loneliness. There is no better time to connect. Partnering with me, you can create a space where you feel comfortable connecting with your tender parts, discovering your strength, and most importantly, being your genuine self with no apology. That’s my experience as a client of therapy, and also what I want to offer you.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
