I provide psychotherapy in the Athens area, specializing in treating symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, and substance use.
I offer a traditional talk therapy focused on your concerns and situation: what you really want, and why you do what you do. The goal is to develop an accurate theory of oneself, which allows one to make more informed choices and tends to result in contentment and courage.

Many people today face complex problems related to employment, money, tragedy, mental and physical health, relationships, habits and addictions. The inability to cope with these added pressure and stresses of life sometimes interferes with our desire to be happy and live a satisfying life. While some may be able to make the needed adjustments on their own, others may need professional guidance to get their life back on track.

If you are seeking counseling, you might be trying to make sense of challenging relationships, in the middle of an unforeseen transition, or just starting to process wounds from your past. With everything that you are dealing with, you may have noticed some patterns emerging that keep you from feeling like yourself--maybe criticism directed inward or at others, coping with food or substances, or just shutting down completely.

I've since spent time in a variety of professions, but my experience in mental health first began in 2017 as a substance use counselor in an outpatient methadone clinic.
In our "land of the free," experiences of depression, anxiety, stress, and trauma are increasingly common. Many feel weighed down by shame about the past, dread about the future, or disconnection in their relationships. Our culture that demands constant productivity makes it easy to lose sight of meaning and connection. I work with people navigating these challenges, particularly those at the intersections of religious trauma, neurodivergence, and gender & sexual identity. If you're searching for clarity, growth, and connection, I am here to partner with you.

Counseling is like hiring a tour guide when life hands you a ticket to a ride you didn't ask for. All of my clients have found themselves on this ride, and they all want a way off. This is the work: We examine the situation, discover secret passages, and figure out what makes it tick, because the only way out is in, and if it weren't for this dang town, we'd never get to see what we're truly capable of.

The people who call me for help are real people just like you. You exhaust yourself trying to cope with the stresses and strains of real life. You often feel overburdened, stressed out, and maybe even trapped. You try to stay positive about things, but your resources [emotional and financial] are likely stretched to the breaking point. Your relationships are struggling. It seems that the harder you try to make things work, the worse they seem to get. There's not enough time to do what needs done. Every moment you spend in therapy has to count.

Let’s be honest—life can feel like a lot sometimes. Maybe you're carrying the weight of things that have happened to you. Maybe you're stuck in patterns that no longer serve you—feeling anxious, depressed, numb, or just totally disconnected. Or maybe your relationship is hanging on by a thread after too many fights, too much silence, or a betrayal that’s left you both reeling. You don’t have to keep going through this alone. I help individuals and couples who are feeling overwhelmed, lost, or stuck—whether it’s because of trauma, addiction, anxiety, depression, or relationship struggles such as persistent conflict or infidelity.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
