Are you fully content with your life? My guess is probably not. You probably wish something in your life is different or better. You might want to throw in the towel, give up on life, and avoid the pain altogether. It feels impossible for things to change, so why bother? Maybe you're struggling with intense emotional outbursts, the desire to hurt yourself, or unstable relationships. Or, maybe you find it easier to push away your emotions, avoid triggers, and exert control wherever you can. You don't want to feel the pain. So what can we do about it?

Therapy shouldn’t be something to be intimidated by. It should be a place where you come to feel safe and heard. When it feels like your problems and thoughts are too big to explain to those in your inner circle, that’s when therapy is there. The goal is to become a better version of ourselves and in the end: be nicer to ourselves when it feels like no one else will be. This may be dealing with loneliness, depression, anxious thoughts, or dealing with your past.

My ideal client is ready for change, even if they’re not exactly sure what that looks like yet. They may not fully understand their patterns, but they know something isn’t working and are ready for support in finding a new way forward. I work best with clients who are motivated, open, and willing to explore their experiences with honesty and curiosity. At the core of my work is the therapeutic relationship—I strive to create a space that feels genuine, secure, accepting, and, when needed, gently challenging.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to acknowledge when we need help. It can be even more difficult to acknowledge this with someone else present. Counseling, however, creates a safe space to share struggles, fears, feelings, experiences, and more. Counseling can provide peace of mind in good times or bad. As a counselor it is my goal to provide you with a space that is warm and welcoming, and one which you can come as you are! I provide counseling services from a non-judgmental and empathetic point of view.

We often hear the phrase “In life, there are no guarantees.” However, that’s not completely accurate. One thing that is inevitable in life is that there will be change. Sometimes it is subtle, small in comparison to the grand scheme of the things we are facing. At other times, change hits us with the force of a ton of bricks, stopping us in our tracks and negatively impacting our daily lives. It is at these times that our mental, emotional, and physical health becomes susceptible to life's stressors and where we may suffer a decline in our quality of life. You don't have to face these times alone.

I specialize in helping partners betrayed by their spouse / significant other's problematic sexual behavior that may (or may not) involve an emotional or sexual affair, as well as generally helping marriages with standard relationship issues such as communication and conflict resolution. Hope begins when you get unstuck and find a way forward. Whatever the case, I know that if both partners are willing to do the work, they can build marriage number 2 that is vibrant, connected, and joyful. My clients have said they "feel comfortable", "cared for", "given hope", "found a way forward", and "feel so much better after therapy".

I believe people have a true need to be heard and not have their feelings judged. I will provide a safe space for you to be heard and partner with you as you let go of what no longer serves you. I had a wonderful therapist who “gave me permission” to feel what I felt, a safe place to process my pain without judgment, and encouragement to move forward in my life. That is my goal for my clients. I feel it is an honor when someone chooses me as their therapist. Therapy is an equal partnership between client and therapist and the process of counseling can be the catalyst to empower you to make healthy changes.

Hi, I’m Lauren! I’m the founder of Sense of Calm Counseling and a married mom of three little ones (4, 3, and 1). Life is never boring—and often a little chaotic—which I believe helps me be a grounded and relatable therapist. When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me with my family, thrifting, catching up on my shows, or enjoying quiet moments.

My purpose is to inspire and empower others by helping them develop life skills and make the necessary changes to transform their lives. I received a Master of Science degree in counseling from the University of North Georgia in 200l. I found my passion in 2015 when I made a career change from higher education to mental health counseling. I never thought this would be as fulfilling as it has been. I am also an experienced educator with a twenty-one-year career in higher education. I earned a Ph.D. in Leadership for Higher Education with experience as a dean, academic advisor, financial aid counselor, student leader, and life coach.

In our world with so many ways and/or devices to keep us close or connected, why are we so ‘disconnected’. Why are our relationships in shambles? Sometimes we need support, encouragement, and guidance to help us get through the hard times. As your therapist, it is my responsibility to work myself out of a job. To give you some things that will help you deal with the difficulties now, as well as the ones you will encounter in the future. I use various methods and ways to support and encourage a better way of living. When we are hurt, we often act in ways that are self-protecting, but are detrimental to the relationship.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Sugar Hill?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
