It’s truly incredible when a person sees that there’s something inside them that they want to work on, and then they go after that. It’s incredible that you’re here, that you’re searching. The people who want to be the best version of themselves, who want to break “generational traumas” and work on their mental health so that they can pass down health, wholeness, peace, and light to the next generation - those are the superheroes. Our mental health is our foundation for how we relate to ourselves and world around us after all - Our God, ourselves, and others.

In addition to my education in theology, marriage and family therapy, and experience serving a wide variety of people throughout years as a pastor and counselor, I’ve been a construction laborer, a gas station deli cook, and an auto parts factory worker.

Everyone experiences self-defeating behaviors and relationship problems. But it doesn't have to stay this way. With my help, you can change. I have guided many through their hurts, abuse, anger, and depression. As an individual, couple, or family, I will sit with you, creating a safe space for you to be true to you, and help you discover the tools to accomplish your goals.

I graduated from Kansas State University with a BA in Psychology and then Richmont Graduate University with an MA in Marriage and Family.
My perspective is that life is complicated and it's easy to get lost along the way as we face our own struggles like fear, insecurity, shame and worry. If we keep those struggles in the dark, they'll only take root and trip us up and make us start to forget truth. It's only by bringing those dark places into the light that those roots can vanish and we can see truth and grow in ways we could never imagine. It's my joy to partner with others through that process and remove the stigma in seeking help.

A mindful approach to parenting, marriage , school, aging or work will change these endeavors from drudgery to joyous! After many years focusing on children, as I approach retirement I am adding aging concerns to my practice.
I am interested in patients who want to be joyful and content, to cherish their relationships and appreciate the present. Many of us feel pressured, juggling many obligations, believing we need more, more achievements, more things. This "unsatisfactoriness" leads to depression and anxiety. We will suffer less if we appreciate the present more, whether we are caring for children or an aging parent or facing aging ourselves. I am interested in helping people who want to become happier by living in the present and letting go of beliefs that create suffering.

Clients include male/ female adults in addition to married and pre- marital couples.
I am best suited for individuals or couples who recognize a pattern of self-defeating behaviors that destroy relationships and contribute to anxiety/depression. These individuals feel stuck in a seemingly never-ending cycle that may include: procrastination, busyness that leads nowhere, the exhaustion of perfectionism, feelings of rejection, loneliness, or depletion in general--all of which gets worse without intervention. Wishing that distracting issues and concerns would just go away is unproductive. My job is to make psychology applicable to everyday problem-solving and decision-making and therefore give you a reason to hope for a new reality.

We will talk about relationships, intimacy, sexuality to understand how you relate and connect (family, friends, colleagues, partners); to "unpack" the world around (work, culture, social media); and gain skills to navigate transitions (career, children, immigration, marriage , divorce).
You want to "feel more like yourself" with your children, at work, and in your intimate relationships. You want to love freely, find balance, or prepare for a change. We can explore the WHYs or focus on the HOWs. I can help you understand the repeating patterns that impact your well-being and gain new skills to create and discover choices. I offer consultations for brief focused therapy, long-term psychotherapy, coaching, and referrals.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
