Taking the first step can be hard. Anxiety, depression, addiction, and
trauma
are just a few of things that us hold back from experiencing a fulfilled and purposeful life. How do we learn that we are worth good things? The key is healing. Therapy can be something that propels you toward growth. We can learn that we don't have to be the sum of our experiences, but that we can rewrite our own stories. We can shift the narrative so that we are empowered to make the changes we want to make. As someone in recovery from addiction and
trauma
, it's possible and attainable for all. We just have to take that leap and trust the process.

trauma
-informed approaches with psychoeducation sprinkled throughout.
If you're feeling overwhelmed on this search for a new counselor and wondering if therapy's even for you, you're not alone. In my experience as a therapist and a client, making that first phone call can often be the hardest part. I hope you take a moment to be proud of yourself for the effort you've put in just by finding your way here. This next step is where I come in to help! I'll work with you to identify the issues that have been keeping you "stuck", and we'll create a plan to chip away at those obstacles.

We have experienced collective
trauma
and hardship. Our world today may feel more unstable and scary. Dealing with the added mental fog and chaos of sadness, fear, as well as mistakes and struggles from the past, only make the day-to-day grind feel harder and more empty. Family relationships and the pressures and expectations of society often feel overwhelming. Sometimes a truly fulfilling and rich life seems unattainable.

trauma
or chronic stress, while many others come seeking help in overcoming depression, anxiety, loss, significant life changes, and parenting challenges. I am a certified EMDR therapist and have training in using this transformative therapy with both young people and adults. Two of my specializations are in addressing the unique needs of individuals and families involved in adoption, whether as an adopted individual, birth parent, or adoptive parent, and in working with those seeking to hold on to or rediscover their faith after spiritual wounding.

Since 1991, I have worked with many individuals helping them to overcome fears, resolve interpersonal conflicts, understand themselves, identify and avoid negative life patterns and overall personal growth. My ideal client would be an adolescent who has endured some type of
trauma
or abuse. Their needs would include building resiliency and expanding their coping skills "toolbox." Their goal would ultimately be to find hope and healing, despite their adversities. They would want to be an active participant in their treatment, so that therapy could be as beneficial as possible. Having said that, any client who feels that they could benefit from my counseling services is more than welcome into my office!

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
