There are many types of losses, including
death
of a loved one,
loss
of a relationship and even
loss
of the person that you thought you would be.
What if your priority today was to process your
loss
or face your daily anxieties? Sometimes just the thought of exploring your feelings is terrifying. You can get through the day-to-day tasks, but the days overall feel meaningless. It feels impossible to find energy or motivation to work towards the goals you want to achieve or even to think towards the future. Perhaps you cope by staying constantly busy or distracting yourself, but it does not help in the long run. It always feels like there is not enough time and you feel stuck in these patterns.

I work a lot with issues such as depression, anxiety,
grief
and LGBTQIA issues.
You don't know why, but you just don't feel like yourself anymore. You feel depressed, you can't focus, you are anxious or wanting to isolate yourself. You don't know when it started but something is not right and your life is not like it used to be. What would your life be like if you had a greater understanding and better tools for coping with and managing your emotions? What would your relationships be like if you had a deeper awareness of yourself and improved strategies for communicating with your loved ones?

The alarm goes off and your to-do list starts to tally up. You’ve got more items on that list than you have hours in the day. And that cup of coffee doesn’t seem as strong as it used to be. Maybe you’ve started neglecting yourself in the process. You’ve forgotten when you last washed your hair or did anything without the humming rush of anxiety in your chest. Maybe you’re wondering how everyone seems to have this life thing figured out but you. It doesn’t have to be this way, and I’m so glad you’ve found your way to this corner of the internet. Welcome to the counseling experience.

We often find ourselves in need of support during periods of life transition or unforeseen circumstances – whether that be embarking on a second career, retirement, shifting parental roles, marriage, divorce/separation, becoming a caregiver,
loss
of a loved one or our imagined future, relocation, or times of unanticipated stress and crisis.
I approach our time together as an opportunity to co-create a detailed map of your unique experiences and accompanying beliefs. This process allows us to clarify current and future desires, identify strengths and opportunities for wellbeing, and enhance skills. To make the most of our sessions, it is important we develop a relationship based on mutual trust and openness. I seek to provide clients a safe space to express their unfiltered self and receive acceptance. I see my role in our relationship as one of a partner, seeking to join you in your journey towards living a more satisfying life and offering tools to help along the way.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
