From Inner Family Systems (IFS) to Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based approaches, and Child -Centered Play.
I know firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate difficult emotions from a personal and parenting perspective. That's why I enjoy working closely with families to develop strategies for managing challenging behaviors and promoting healthy emotional development in children . Kids can have really BIG feelings, and sometimes it takes big collaboration to help them and you figure it out. Additionally, as someone that has had a lifelong battle with anxiety, I have enjoyed helping people of all ages navigate and develop the tools and strategies you need to manage your symptoms and live a more fulfilling life.

My areas of expertise are working with families and children especially teen girls.
Are you worried that your teen daughter is stressed or depressed? Are you frustrated with the lack of communication or defiant behavior? Are you concerned about your teen's drug and alcohol use? Modern teen-hood for girls is a very difficult time in life, one that needs a specific set of coping skills. The rise in peer pressure, competitive conflicts, and unhealthy social media messages are all likely contributors to a national increase in anxiety, depression and low self-worth in girls. Counseling can help teen girls to improve decision-making, managing stress, and learning coping strategies to better set them up for future success

It takes courage to be open and vulnerable. I value the moment a client decides to share their story with me or a child client asks me to join in their play. These moments bring about trust, and a client's trust means everything to me. My overall goal is to provide a safe and accepting environment while empowering clients to become the best versions of themselves.

I primarily work with preteens and teens struggling with depression and anxiety. Often times, I have seen these presenting issues emerge due to conflicts in identity, within relationships, and even thinking about the future. I also see kids struggling with trauma as well, ranging in varying degrees of traumatic events the child has endured. While many of my kids that I have worked with come from different backgrounds, many strive for the same type of goals: Purpose & meaning, self-awareness, and happiness.

At Early Connections Child & Family Counseling, we are here to help lessen the weight you are feeling on your shoulders.
Sometimes we find ourselves in a challenging season. With changes at home, struggles at school, parenting pitfalls, or increased stress, we can feel uncertain and discouraged. For kids, this can look like increased anxiety, fears, depression, loneliness, and anger. And these BIG feelings can surface as BIG behaviors wreaking havoc at home. As a parent, you need support too - guidance on how to care for your family’s emotional well-being while juggling all, and I mean ALL, the things and taking care of yourself too.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
