You may be having a hard time focusing and paying attention. You may just want to be left alone or are beginning to become more and more irritable about situations. And yet, no one seems to understand you. You believe that you are getting little support or understanding from friends and family. You are experiencing a great deal of stress trying to figure out how to move forward and hold everything else together. You are not alone. Call me. I can help.

Dr. Jeannine Jannot
PhD
As a parent, there's nothing worse than watching your child struggle. Standing by and watching their grades fall and their anxiety rise is excruciating, but nothing you've tried is making the situation better. Your child doesn't seem to know what's due or when, they are unorganized, have no plan for studying, lack effective study habits and skills, and have trouble disengaging from their phones. Communication is breaking down between you and your child and they seem unmotivated and apathetic toward school. You may also be questioning if your child is just being a typical moody
teenager
or if it's more serious. Are they depressed?

Hey there! I'm Alexis, and I’m glad you stopped by. Working alongside individuals, couples and families to overcome obstacles is my passion. I enjoy working with a broad range of issues that include complex trauma, PTSD, substance use, anxiety, depression, grief/loss, self-esteem, anger management, and
adolescent
behavior. In addition, I am passionate about walking with individuals as they navigate their Cultural Identity and LGBTQ+ identity. My priority is to create a safe and nurturing environment for each of my clients. Clients have described my therapeutic style as warm, empathetic and creative with some occasional dry humor.

I have had extensive training in the areas of couple, family and
adolescent
therapy all with a range of presenting issues.
My professional beliefs are based in theory that believes all people want to feel significant, connected and capable and therefore all behavior has a purpose. Patterns and themes develop in people’s lives often discouraging them and at times can inhibit growth and or decrease abilities to function effectively. Many times our patterns and themes can be traced back several generations. I spend the first several sessions getting to know you, your family history and exploring current significant relationships. From these sessions, we will jointly agree to the goals of treatment.

It is an honor and privilege when people choose to reach out and share some of the most vulnerable areas of their lives with me, and is not something I take lightly. I understand that choosing to inquire about counseling means different things for different people, and that each person brings a different life journey. I love walking along side my clients, empowering them to make healthy changes, while approaching each person with empathy, genuineness, and warmth.

When I work with a child or
adolescent
I include the family as I find this to be most effective approach.
There are many things to consider when starting therapy. It can be overwhelming to find a good therapist who is also a good fit. I specialize in mood disorders (anxiety, depression and bipolar d/o) and OCD (obsessive-compulsive d/o) with clients of a diverse age range. I also work with clients who have long-standing relational and personality issues. I work from a holistic model and I help clients to make small changes across many areas of their lives: physical and mental health, social support, stress reduction, spirituality/faith (if there is a desire to incorporate it), while holding the cultural context of each person in mind.

daughter is stressed or depressed? Are you frustrated with the lack of communication or defiant behavior? Are you concerned about your
teen
's drug and alcohol use? Modern
teen
-hood for girls is a very difficult time in life, one that needs a specific set of coping skills. The rise in peer pressure, competitive conflicts, and unhealthy social media messages are all likely contributors to a national increase in anxiety, depression and low self-worth in girls. Counseling can help
teen
girls to improve decision-making, managing stress, and learning coping strategies to better set them up for future success

My ideal client would be an
adolescent
who has endured some type of trauma or abuse. Their needs would include building resiliency and expanding their coping skills "toolbox." Their goal would ultimately be to find hope and healing, despite their adversities. They would want to be an active participant in their treatment, so that therapy could be as beneficial as possible. Having said that, any client who feels that they could benefit from my counseling services is more than welcome into my office!

In addition to my support and guidance to the people I work with, I also walk through the journey with something to learn from you as well. Sometimes the families that look perfect on the outside struggle behind closed doors. Moms are grappling to make picture-perfect Pinterest parties for kids who barely speak to them, make sure her parents can still live independently, connect to husbands who are trying to succeed amid the stresses of work, all while surpassing expectations at the office. It's hard to explain to your
teenager
why they should have to work for their trip to Europe because it builds "character", in a Kardashian society.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
