Gray Story Counseling and Wellness is a place where you can come undone and leave understood. Perhaps shame, fear, lack of self worth, or the trials of life have kept you from seeking out support? Even with all of your high achievements, you still don't feel like you are enough? Maybe you can't quite (yet) name the battle you are facing? Not to worry, I also help my clients identify where to begin their healing journey.

Going through trauma, grief, depression, anxiety, or an eating disorder can feel very lonely and isolating. It’s common to believe no one truly understands what you're going through. I have worked with many people who have experienced tragedies and painful chapters in their lives, and perhaps you can relate to some of those overwhelming feelings. I'm here to tell you: you don't have to go through this alone. Whether you’re seeking a place to heal, explore painful memories, or receive support, there is strength in reaching out. I would be honored to walk alongside you on your journey.

Are you feeling disconnected from yourself and from others? Maybe you are finding yourself feeling numb, anxious, or hopeless. Do you find yourself reliving your worst experiences - or maybe even avoiding people or situations that remind you of them. Your trauma may even have left you believing you’re worthless, unlovable, or broken. Isolation, anger, irritability, feeling stuck, and difficulties with trust are all common reactions to trauma, but there is hope.

Painful experiences can burrow into the body, shaping how we relate and trust. I support clients with trauma and complex PTSD by first establishing trust, then rebuilding a foundation of safety and connection. Additionally, I specialize in counseling those managing chronic illness, chronic pain, and medical anxiety. In session, we address the emotional and practical challenges of living with an ongoing, sometimes invisible condition. My approach blends somatic experiencing with trauma-focused therapy to support nervous-system regulation and healthier patterns of relating.

I do not believe in the statement "my past does not define me." It absolutely does! Everything you have experienced, both good and bad, is the reason why you are who you are today. Every single choice you make is made through the lenses of your life experiences. We run from labels that have been forced on us and grasp for ones that make us feel more... What would happen if you embraced your true self, who you really are inside and out, the good and the bad. Then sorted out your past to the best of its ability and took it from there day by day in the present for your future? I would be honored to walk this journey with you!

I am a down to earth, approachable person who enjoys meeting people and helping them find a way to navigate through the obstacles that life puts in their way. I do this by using the strengths clients already have, and by creating and developing new ones which we find together. I develop intimate relationships with my clients; therapy is serious business and there is a lot of work to be done, but I work side-by-side with my clients to achieve the goals we create in our initial sessions. There is room for laughter too, and there is plenty of that in therapy also.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
