Alone, depressed, in a chaotic relationship – some days it feels like all these. Other days, it feels like just a lot of stress and anxiety. Those aren’t any fun either. Wondering how you got to this place, fear of failure, anxiety about the future, and inability to focus on things that matter – that’s how you go to sleep at night. Mulling over and over how, why, what should you do… without answers. . You hate this feeling but wonder how you can ever change it. I can help. These challenges may become the steppingstone to success, healing, and wholeness.

You don’t need to “think” your way out of pain—because healing doesn’t just happen in the mind. It happens in the body, the breath, the rhythm of the nervous system. I specialize in somatic movement psychotherapy, nervous system re-patterning, yoga therapy, EMDR, and psycho-spiritual care for women and girls (ages 12+). My approach is grounded in the understanding that the body holds the imprint of trauma, chronic stress, and emotional wounds—and that it also holds the potential for deep relief, reconnection, and restoration.

Growing up in Ghana, there was no such thing as talk therapy. Mental health was not a topic of discussion in my culture. I became fascinated with talk therapy during my college years here in America. Over the years, I have felt the need to bring talk therapy to the fore front of my community and all. My exprience has been working with adults with serious mental illnesses, children with family trauma and abandonments, individuals and families. I specialize in couples and groups as well. My approach is creating a safe space for you to be vulnerable and sincere in your disclosure of deep and personal thoughts. I am an LGBTQ ally.

All of the therapists here believe that what sets us apart from many other therapists is the fact we actually help you help yourself make the necessary changes in your life by giving you techniques, tools, skills, and guidance to achieve your goals. You'll almost always walk out of a session with a new technique or two that you can go home and start using immediately. Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
