As a therapist, I love working with anyone who wants to better understand themselves and to grow each and every day as a human being. I work well with all ages, but work best with those over the age of 12. I have a lot of experience with leadership development, personal development, and health and wellness and I often weave those into my individual therapy sessions. I love when people set goals and we can work together to get them wherever they want to go. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression , disordered eating, life transitions, fertility issues, low self esteem, trauma, and relationship issues.

I specialize in symptoms of depression and anxiety that are often rooted in child and adult trauma.
Relationship is core to healing. I want clients to feel at home in my office where I create a non-judgmental and non-critical environment for exploration of the client's values and beliefs as a key to opening up the path of healing. My strengths of learner, responsibility, maximizer, developer and harmony are used to engage and connect in relationship. As a trauma informed counselor, I believe getting to the root source of issues maximizes healing while creating safety and stabilization promotes healthy grieving. Current concerns are important and incorporated in the overall treatment plan.

If you are feeling the pressures of life and becoming overwhelmed with crippling anxiety, depression , scattered brain and unable to cope, reach out to me for a complimentary 15 minute consultation.
Growing up in Ghana, there was no such thing as talk therapy. Mental health was not a topic of discussion in my culture. I became fascinated with talk therapy during my college years here in America. Over the years, I have felt the need to bring talk therapy to the fore front of all communities. My exprience has been working with adults with serious mental illnesses, children with family trauma and abandonments, individuals and families. I specialize in couples and groups as well. My approach is creating a safe space for you to be vulnerable and sincere in your disclosure of deep and personal thoughts. I am an LGBTQ ally.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with experience providing therapy to individuals and families experiencing anxiety, depression , mood disorders, grief and trauma.
So much of how we see ourselves and the world is based on the beliefs we hold closely, sometimes unknowingly. These beliefs are developed and emphasized over time, feeling more and more like solid truth. All too often, these beliefs are not only untrue, they are harmful to our mental health and perception of who we are and what we're worth. I am dedicated to walking with you as you come to identify, understand and work through those beliefs to move toward self-compassion and growth. I am passionate about helping you to grow in self-awareness surrounding your emotions, relationships and ability to make changes within yourself.

I am a down to earth, approachable person who enjoys meeting people and helping them find a way to navigate through the obstacles that life puts in their way. I do this by using the strengths clients already have, and by creating and developing new ones which we find together. I develop intimate relationships with my clients; therapy is serious business and there is a lot of work to be done, but I work side-by-side with my clients to achieve the goals we create in our initial sessions. There is room for laughter too, and there is plenty of that in therapy also.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
