We all face painful changes and transitions in life, such as relationship issues, substance use, self-worth, stress, identity issues, lack of connection or meaning, traumas, and grief.
I completed my doctorate in Professional Counseling and Supervision at the University of West Georgia. My expertise includes relationship issues, trauma, substance use, and anxiety. I help individuals manage emotions and develop coping and communication skills. I help individuals gain insights into patterns that prevent them from having the life they want.

In my 40+ years of counseling experience, I have helped thousands of people. I have extensive experience working with the Christian community and also have clients with no religious background. I can work on issues like anger, depression, ADHD, anxiety, addiction, and grief. Having worked 15 years in psychiatric hospital settings has helped by exposing me to people dealing with serious issues. My clients say I am a great listener, am easy to talk to and they enjoy my sense of humor. See my website at www.counselingguy.com. I also now offer video sessions.

Many people take better care of their vehicles than we do themselves. If your vehicle starts showing signs of breaking down, you will find some help. But how many of us will ignore the warning signs of depression, anxiety, family conflict, addiction, or suicidal thoughts? If we could write our own scripts, none of us would deal with debt, death, infertility, miscarriages, grief, job loss, chronic pain, toxic stress, infidelity, PTSD, obsessive thoughts, or issues related to social media. But you can write a script for recovery! Just call me. I’ll journey with you. I’ll help you find your way back to a more whole, healthy, you.

Substance use and co-occurring diagnoses, trauma, anxiety, shame, grief, loss, adjustment disorders, and the influence of aging and chronic illness on such life challenges are some of my focus areas.
Building a strong therapeutic connection is what comes first as the foundation of our work. I practice with humility and non-judgment as an imperfect, life-learner who understands that your experiences are unique. I favor insight-oriented and strengths-based therapies that provide the space and support you need to address obstacles and chart goals.

The people who call me for help are real people just like you. You exhaust yourself trying to cope with the stresses and strains of real life. You often feel overburdened, stressed out, and maybe even trapped. You try to stay positive about things, but your resources [emotional and financial] are likely stretched to the breaking point. Your relationships are struggling. It seems that the harder you try to make things work, the worse they seem to get. There's not enough time to do what needs done. Every moment you spend in therapy has to count.

I specialize in counseling clients with eating disorders, substance use disorders, and trauma.
Life experiences can sometimes leave us feeling as though we are presented with something too challenging or difficult to face. We can feel lost, overwhelmed, and unsure. So we can turn to coping mechanisms that might help us in the moment but aren't realistic long-term. Everyone needs help from time to time. I believe in empowering my clients to gain the tools and self-awareness they need in order to achieve more peace and serenity in their lives.

My experiences with depression, anxiety, and self-medicating eventually became a substance use disorder—and ultimately led me to a deeper purpose in the counseling field.
I believe we must own our stories—otherwise, they end up owning us. In our work together, we’ll explore your past with curiosity and reframe it in a way that empowers rather than limits you. What once felt like a liability can become part of your strength. Therapy is a collaborative process, and the relationship is central to that healing.

I have worked and served in different communities around Georgia in the past 12 years. I am not a laid back clinician and I am active. I interact and pick on my clients a lot. I will confront you! My method of counseling is experiential and is client focused. I don't give advice but if I feel anything about your life, I will tell you for sure. I don't hide myself behind my psychotherapy methods. I see young children for play therapy, couples, and adults and teens with various issues. I am a clinical supervisor and provide group supervision for freshly graduates on Thursdays at 12:30 pm.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
