OCD-GAD-PMADS - Are you an over-thinker? Do your thoughts have a way of consuming your mind? Do you treat these thoughts as facts? Do your thoughts and emotions sometimes feel like a blazing fire that is out of control interfering with your relationships, work & all of the things and people important to you? Does loneliness seem to stop by uninvited insisting on a seat at your table? Is your self-worth on a never ending rollercoaster attached to life’s ups and downs? If you answered yes to any of these; you are not alone & you are not broken. You-Are-Human. You deserve hope & healing. You deserve to invest in your mental health.

Sonya’s coaching philosophy is straightforward and goal-oriented: It’s about transitioning from merely surviving to truly thriving, unencumbered by past experiences. In our first meeting, we’ll begin with the following prompt: “I wish for … but I feel hindered by …” As your ThriveHER Coach, my approach is built on three fundamental steps: (1.) Identifying the barriers that are holding you back; (2.) Defining your personal and professional ambitions; (3.) Developing a strategic roadmap to lead you towards your objectives.

People often decide to seek psychotherapy because of a life crisis or a personal desire for change. As a licensed psychologist for the last 30 years, I have the training, professional, and personal life experience to enable me to help clients achieve their goals in order to improve their lives. I am gratified to be a part of the psychotherapy process with each client, as I agree with Carl Jung's statement that " the meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction, both are transformed".

I enjoy helping individuals and couples find hope, healing, and peace within themselves and their relationships. Together we will develop effective strategies to live fulfilling and meaningful lives. I believe that counseling can be instrumental in helping individuals know themselves more deeply which will facilitate changes that will positively affect not only their relationships but also their personal self-concept. I work with couples to create a measurable plan to get their relationship back on track. I also offer premarital counseling for those beginning their marriage journey to develop a firm foundation for the future.

I am a passionate wellbeing leader who understands the importance of self-care in order to get the most out life. My unique background has allowed me to work with disabled patients in rehab programs, serve as a coordinator of wrap-around services for children with special needs, and gain experience in corporate positions that require attention to detail and demand work-life balance. This journey has taught me to be empathetic to my client's circumstances. I have a client-centered approach that considers every aspect of their lives, and meet each person where they are in their mental wellness journey.

There is nothing quite like a safe space to just be and heal. I would love to provide that for you as we unpack challenges such as stress management, anxiety, depression, relationship matters, parenthood, the peri-natal journey (conception, pregnancy, child loss, childbirth, postpartum, etc.), trauma, and life and career transitions, among others. As a first-generation Nigerian-American, I am especially passionate about holding space for those who identify as immigrants, children of immigrants and undocumented citizens to work through the often complex acculturation experiences and unique stresses they may face.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
