Domestic Abuse Therapists in Decatur, GA
Before I became a therapist, I worked in advocacy for survivors of intimate partner abuse for almost 7 years.
Let's be honest - it's hard out here. Existing in this world is heavy, and many of us struggle with anxiety, burnout, people-pleasing, and other painful emotions. Unfortunately, most of us experience traumatic events, childhoods, or relationships, leaving us feeling disconnected from our sense of self.
Whatever is showing up for you now, I am here to listen, witness your story, and work with you to rebuild your sense of self-worth, self-trust, and safety. Together, we can safely explore and process your experiences and build a toolkit of skills that can help you move forward, set boundaries, and advocate for yourself.

I work with clients from diverse backgrounds to address sex therapy related issues (i.e. sexual "dysfunction," enhancement of pleasure, sexual identity development, etc.) and trauma related to interpersonal violence, attachment wounds, and systemic oppression.
In my current practice, I utilize a combination of somatics and other skills-based modalities to help clients learn to handle difficult emotions both in and outside of the therapy office. I collaborate with my clients in cultivating a treatment plan that addresses unprocessed trauma and assists in expanding their current capacity for pleasure and connection.

I counsel individuals (depression, transition, grief and loss, anxiety, substance abuse), couples (relationship, premarital and marital counseling), and groups (life development).
Confusing emotions, a general discontentment with life, or a life-changing event can motivate a person to seek counseling. Counseling helps us better understand our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. A better self-understanding helps us to reconsider our participation in undesired or unhealthy behaviors, improves our self-image, and positions us to engage healthier, more mutually gratifying relationships. Psychotherapy helps us to process or work through traumatic or hurtful experiences and gain insight into unhealthy emotions associated with these experiences. Over time, we can learn healthier ways to engage life and relationships.

Sometimes healing feels like an uphill battle, doesn't it?
Maybe you've tried everything (medications, years of talk therapy, countless self-help books or podcasts) yet you still find yourself caught in familiar patterns of anxiety, depression, or trauma responses. If you're reading this, chances are you're exhausted from carrying so much alone.
I see you. And I want you to know that feeling stuck doesn't mean you're broken.
Hi, I'm Kelsie (human who also knows anxiety/depression/grief/trauma), and I work with adults in Georgia and Florida who are ready to break free from cycles that no longer serve them.

Experience tells me that most people who seek counseling feel unable to make changes in their life that could bring them greater happiness. I consider it my responsibility and a privilege to facilitate your journey of self-empowerment to make these desired changes. Together we will explore how current patterns of feeling, thinking and acting could be altered by increasing mindfulness and self-compassion. While most of our focus is on the present and future, I also seek to honor your past by exploring how unresolved feelings may be hindering your growth and ability to meet personal goals.

Do you feel sad, confused, afraid, stressed, frustrated, or angry? I've been there, too. There is so much to contend with in our world including increasingly complex families & relationships, changing technology, stressful jobs/school, sociopolitical stress, parenting, financial concerns, uncertainties, and sometimes feelings of powerlessness or even hopelessness. This is cumulative stress/trauma. What can you learn to do? 1) clarify what you can/cannot control, 2) manage what you can't control in healthy ways, 3) prioritize values/goals, 4) understand mind-body connections, 5) regulate your reactions, 6) remain in the present.

If you are struggling to bounce back from a recent assault or fighting to overcome the abuse you experienced as a child, most likely your community and our culture hasn't made it easier.
Working through trauma requires tremendous courage. No one wants to find themselves having to focus on healing the past, but once you realize that’s what you need to move forward, there’s no looking back. Whether you are dealing with triggers, flashbacks, nightmares, relationship issues, anxiety, chronic health problems, or simply struggling to stop thinking about unpleasant events from the past, trauma can affect us all differently. I have the experience and training to support you as you shift the patterns you have developed in response to adversity.

Are you feeling overwhelmed or powerless in response to recent events? You’re not alone. In a society shaped by heterosexual, cisgender, and neurotypical privilege, navigating life can be incredibly challenging - especially for queer, trans, gender-expansive, and neurodivergent folks.
As a queer-identifying therapist specializing in relational and complex trauma, I work collaboratively with clients in an anti-oppressive, trauma-sensitive, gender-affirming, and harm-reducing way. My goal is to create a space where you feel empowered, seen, and supported as you navigate your healing journey.

Domestic Abuse Therapists
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.
When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.
What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.
How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
