Because children do not come with a handbook, parents are often wondering if they are parenting correctly. Sometimes your house and your relationships can feel strained due to the challenges of parenting. Parents can feel as if the child is in charge of the emotional barometer of the house. Most parents at some point experience feelings of being overwhelmed and not knowing how to be effective and supportive at the same time. Therapy is a way of taking those first steps toward making positive changes for yourself and your family. By making small changes, you will be able to enjoy a more fulfilling parenting experience.

I have helped parents better understand their children and develop new parenting skills, worked with families and patients who are living with brain injury to help them cope with grief and to accept their “new normal,” and helped LGBT people, of all ages, to support and affirm their journey.
I see psychotherapy as a partnership and a process, where the client is the expert about their own life and the therapist is a guide. My emphasis is on helping clients change unhelpful behavior and thinking patterns that prevent them from building and maintaining positive and lasting relationships. The core of good therapy is based on building a relationship of trust, empathy and respect for the client. I provide an environment of safety and trust where we can explore issues, fears, concerns, and hopes. My goal is to transfer knowledge, skills and confidence so, eventually, you won’t need me!

I am trained in multiple modalities (ARC, DBT, CBT, and TF-CBT) and use an integrative, play based approach in my work with children .
Dealing with unexpected challenges and difficult behaviors can leave parents feeling frustrated, upset, and isolated. Whether you are dealing with a family transition, processing a loss or trauma, navigating mood or behavioral challenges, or facing other challenges, support is available. Through integrative play-based interventions, I help children and families find new ways to communicate and manage life stressors to get the family life they desire. I work to create an open, supportive environment where children and families are able to express themselves freely and learn new ways to cope and interact.

As a counselor for over 20 years, I have had the opportunity to work with people from various backgrounds. I work along side you and will help you to "see" where you want to go and to develop a plan to get there.

I am a Health/School Psychologist, LPC, Play Therapist, and former educator with 25+ years of experience working with children /adolescents with academic, emotional, or behavioral concerns.
Trauma, life stress, and emotional difficulties can cause persons to encounter challenges at home, work, and school. Some experiences are routine, although sometimes events create less positive outcomes in family/peer relationships or school/work performance. Persons can feel overly worried or hopeless; engage in damaging behaviors; or face changes to socializing, eating, or sleeping habits. If you are experiencing challenges, I can help you help you modify old patterns using various expressive creative modalities.

"It's a privilege to be able to bear witness to someone's story when they may not have had the chance to tell it before." - Lindy Alexander. I believe in the celebration of baby steps, because they lead to growth, evolving, and newfound strength. I provide a space absent of judgment, and full of empathy. Are you a parent struggling to understand your child 's feelings and behaviors? I can provide space for both parenting strategies and the child 's expression of emotions through play. Are you an adult struggling with difficult life stressors and transitions? I can provide the emotional space necessary for clarity and peace.

I work with children and adolescents with anxiety, depression, ADHD, low self-esteem, behavioral concerns, and poor peer relationships.
Art therapy may look like just a fun creative process, but it is an effective therapeutic technique that utilizes the creative process to help improve the mental health and emotional well-being of people of all ages. Discovering healthy and creative forms of expression is empowering for those who find a voice through the creative processes of making art. I believe in a positive, holistic, and gentle approach that honors the individual and encourages healing and personal growth. During our time together, I help you and/or your child explore yourself in this safe space beyond language and conversation.

As a parent I know that seeing your child go through these difficult situations can be overwhelming and discouraging. When children are having a hard time they don’t always use their words to communicate what they are experiencing. Oftentimes they show it in their behaviors. This can look like tantrums, not listening, avoiding, talking back, misbehaving in school or even self harm. It can be difficult to manage or know what to do when these behaviors occur. Raising children can be challenging and guiding them through the stages of growing up can be even more challenging but you don't have to do it alone.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
