Among the wide variety of issues people work on with me are anxiety and depression, relationship problems, self concept, parenting issues, and sexual identity and expression.
I work with people in a warm, supportive way that bolsters their internal strengths and resources but that also challenges them and invites change. While helping people feel better as quickly as possible, I also help them grow personally, understand themselves more deeply, have more rewarding relationships, and make deep, lasting change. Creativity, spontaneity, and sense of humor are important to me and I try to incorporate these qualities into all of my work. I most often see people individually but frequently work with couples, helping them work through difficulties and enhance their connection with each other.

I am a licensed clinical social worker with 15 years experience in the area of adult mental health. My approach to therapy emphasizes a genuine presence and warmth. I believe deep listening and presence establish a bond between client and therapist that must be present before theory or technique can be effective. I believe that bearing compassionate witness to others stories can lessen despair, increase trust, and create a safe place for the healing process to begin. I have interest and experience in grief work, persistent anxiety /depression, problems that follow traumatic events or abuse, and helping with life transitions.

If you are struggling with anxiety , depression or adapting to changes in life, psychotherapy can be very helpful. Slowing down and taking the time to learn to self reflect and understand what’s happening that’s making you unhappy is an invaluable investment in yourself.

My experience includes providing care for individuals with depression & anxiety , trauma, emotional distress and impulsivity, grief, and substance use.
Seeking and engaging in therapy can be a daunting task for most people. Many of us invalidate our problems and fault ourselves for not fixing them or feeling better immediately, yet we are lost in the distress of our issues and symptoms. If this is the case, then I commend you for seeking support! I believe in talk therapy because it provides you the space to find needed perspective on your life, and from there, you can take actionable and brave steps towards healing. My goal as a therapist is to provide you that space, understand your life and the issues that brought you here.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
