My other specialties include anxiety, stress, depression, self-esteem, interpersonal conflict, social skills training, parenting concerns, new mothers and their infants, life transitions, attachment issues, family conflict, relationships and marriage, abuse, spirituality, and multicultural concerns.
I have a passion for supporting children and families in addressing trauma as early in life as possible, including working with young mothers and their infants, and at the source, which in some cases is imprinted in intergenerational practices and narratives. I also help adults identify childhood trauma causing them to feel stuck and struggle in their relationships and attachments. I enjoy coaching parents and caregivers to develop and enhance the emotional connection with their children. I support people in reducing distress and improving relationships by improving interpersonal skills and social functioning.

I know how hard it is to wait while your child struggles in school, not only from a teacher and administrator perspective, but also a child and parent perspective.
I am a clinical psychologist, school psychologist, and veteran with 6 degrees in psychology and 26 years of experience—20 with Gwinnett County Public Schools. I offer tradition child and adult therapy, with a Christian focus, yet specialize in two areas: (1) Psychological and/or "psycho-educational" evaluations to enhance success in school, college, or career path; and (2) A highly specialized therapy-based martial arts program for children that repeated research has found effective for improving attention, focus, self-control, and performance in the classroom (see "Groups" below).

Navigating the world is tough enough, but when you add being Neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, a single parent , a minority, or any number of marginalized identities on top of it the weight can appear unbearable. The effect our individual identities can have on our home life, job, social life, and our very sense of self can make dealing with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting struggles, or engaging in self-care seem like a daunting task. We all strive for whole wellness but that looks different for everybody. The whole wellness you desire is not out of reach.

I help clients become the parent they want to be through creating safe space to explore their thoughts and feelings.
The expectation often is that becoming a mother is the most joyous moment of a woman’s life, but on the inside motherhood can feel isolating and crazy. These inner thoughts can be difficult to manage alone. Sharing with others is risky – letting go of appearances – or fear of what others will think – or how they might react – all add to the isolation new parents often feel. During pregnancy and the baby’s first year, anxiety can run high with a thousand “what-if” worries. Handling worries and the new identity can be overwhelming when also facing sleep deprivation.

As high achieving women and girls you have worked hard to achieve your education and career goals, and now struggle with feeling stressed, the imposter syndrome, or being one of the only ones in your work or education place. Others believe you have it all; on the outside you look independent, accomplished and “together”, but on the inside you feel anxious, depressed, and overwhelmed. You struggle to maintain your professional position while managing the rest of your life. Your personal life and self-care suffers. You feel exhausted by it all and have no idea how to get out of the cycle, but realize it is time for change.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
