As high achieving women and girls you have worked hard to achieve your education and career goals, and now struggle with feeling stressed, the imposter syndrome, or being one of the only ones in your work or academic environment. Others believe you have it all; on the outside you look independent, accomplished and “together”, but on the inside you feel anxious, depressed, and overwhelmed. You struggle to maintain your professional position while managing the rest of your life. Your personal life and self-care suffers. You feel exhausted by it all and have no idea how to get out of the cycle, but realize it is time for change.

I work with people who struggle with anxiety, mood swings, addictions, and marital problems. Life can be difficult at times, especially when we feel isolated. So often, we wear masks for the benefit of those around us, while inside we suffer and abuse ourselves. Few people are truly the person that their friends perceive them to be on the inside.Fewer still are those completely at peace with themselves.

Dr. David Cuna's life story is a testament to the transformative power of perseverance, education, and compassion. Born in the remote Angolan village of Cuximane in Maquela do Zombo, Angola, he faced significant challenges early on. Growing up without basic amenities like electricity and clean water, his access to formal education was limited to the 4th grade. However, his unwavering determination and thirst for knowledge propelled him on a journey that would change his life and inspire others. He established the Cuna Wellness Center, a private clinical practice that allows him to impact the lives of others directly.

Life can be challenging. Waking up dreading the day ahead, feeling disconnected from everyday joys, cringing as you begin your workday, unable to fix or face problems with what worked before, not being fully present in your own life, hiding your pain behind a smiling face and robotically wash-rinse-repeating your day, living more inside your head and your disappointments than in your purpose, or dragging yourself from one moment to the next. So many questions and challenges with no answers in sight. You want to feel better, and I want to help.

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists

How does cognitive processing therapy work?

A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?

CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?

A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
