I work with people living with PTSD and C-PTSD, anxiety, depression, stress, and chronic illness.
Everyone deserves to live a fulfilling life. Asking for help is a mark of stepping into your own power and shows a desire to heal. I help clients who have been impacted by trauma reclaim their sense of self, establish peace in their bodies and minds, validate their own feelings and needs, and process their guilt and shame. I walk beside my clients as they form a new relationship with themselves, find compassion for themselves, advocate for their right to have feelings and needs, and express themselves in kind and honest ways. I value my clients showing up authentically so that I may hold space for all their experiences.

Maybe we will know in ways that sizzle like magnolia buds in early spring and take us over the way pain used
My clinical focus is bodily, emotional recovery from trauma, childhood experience, loss, grief, depression and anxiety. I believe in the possibilities for my clients to discover a second life-of joy, purpose, & renewal they couldn’t imagine at the depths of despair-struggle-change. "Maybe we will find a new purpose. Dedicate to an old dream. Maybe we will soften. Meet God. Taste the vast reservoir of our resiliency and strength. Find beauty and meaning in the simple things—like a cup of tea with a loved one while watching a yellow-tinged leaf dance into a puddle. Maybe we will find dancing or painting or writing or art or science

Complex trauma changes the way our brains work over time. Fortunately, healing does the same thing. By working through how distressing events impacted us, we can create a life where we feel fully alive and can thrive. While I have worked with a variety of different mental health concerns, I specialized in complex trauma and dissociation, neurodivergence and autism in adults, and LGBT issues. I am a nonbinary counselor; my pronouns are they/them.

The truth is, you're a total badass who has been pushing through pain and difficulty most of your life.
You've probably been to traditional talk therapy before and found it somewhat helpful, but you don't quite FEEL the change you were hoping for, or the symptoms came back a few months later. My work is guided by somatic trauma-informed modalities that focus on helping your overworked nervous system re-negotiate how it finds a sense of peace and safety.

My particular gift is in establishing a a therapeutic space where individual men and women, as well as adolescents and young adults, who are in pain or under stress, can feel safe and understood.
Many of my clients face life transitions, traumas, anxiety and depression, loss and grief, and spiritual crises, or the pain of a troubled relationship. I believe that therapy can be beneficial at some point in any person's life. So, I see my clients as fellow seekers rather than patients.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
