In 2005, I participated in "intensive" DBT trainings and have been to workshops conducted by the creator of DBT, Marsha Linehan.
The most important thing I offer each of my clients is HOPE. I believe change is constant and things can get better each day. I strive to teach my clients how to cope during stressful times and be more mindful of the positive things in their lives. I believe in a person's ability to change and can offer skills to help with this process. I have more than 10 years experience working with adults, teens, and families. I also offer group counseling for those who would benefit from meeting other people with similar struggles.

When do we seek help? When we suspect that "something is wrong", when we are suffering, when we don't feel encouraged to ask questions, when we become fixated to nonsense or when we no longer find satisfaction and life becomes more of the same. Psychotherapy is an open door to change, to embark on a path towards understanding what's hurting, bothering, distressing or paralyzing us. Therapy could help us change our perspectives, thoughts, and behaviors. It could leads us to adapt to what concerns us, distresses or affects us so we could live more fulfilling lives.

We all need support in dealing with life's challenges, but sometimes just asking for help can feel as overwhelming as the problems for which we are seeking support. The task of finding the right therapist can be difficult. Who can I trust? Will I be heard and understood? Will they work well with my children and/or family? We understand these concerns and work to create a compassionate therapeutic environment to help our clients grow and change.

I have been in the recovery field for 7 years and have seen a wide range of issues related to addiction. Addiction in itself can be a traumatic event as it causes us to go against our morals. Addiction often contributes to shame and can produce anger, anxiety& depression as well as a wide range of other issues. I have created treatment plans for every issue my clients have presented with as related to addiction. Each client has a different set of issues, needs and goals so I take a person-centered approach to best meet those needs. It's important to identify our strengths and capitalize on these rather than focusing on the problem.

Resiliency...this is the most powerful quality of the human spirit. I work with clients to help them realize and expand upon this quality. I have been in the mental health field since 1998. My career has given me the opportunity to work with children, adolescents, and adults in every imaginable setting (e.g., private practice, clinics, inpatient, outpatient, outdoor therapy, HIV/AIDS, incarceration, foster care, addiction). My education, clients, and experiences have given me a wealth of understanding that I am thankful to be able to bring into my private practice.

Finding an inclusive, affirming, and radical therapist in the South can be disheartening. I am here to help marginalized/minority people and their relations to navigate the challenges our society places on them. As a mixed-Indigenous, queer, cisgender woman, I welcome adult clients who are exploring their multi-layered identity, navigating difficult family/community dynamics, searching for chosen family, and healing from past/current trauma. I warmly invite neurodiverse folks who want to empower themselves and learn more about their inherent strengths. I am kink and poly/nonmonogamy affirming too! All are welcome here.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
