You are feeling trapped. Stuck in a seemingly endless loop of unwanted thoughts, fears, or painful memories. You feel like the only way to get relief is to avoid what hurts or do something…anything to quiet the thoughts. Your symptoms have made your life smaller and smaller until you don't even recognize who you are or who you were meant to be. You only see your symptoms. OCD, anxiety, depression, substance use , and/or trauma make you feel like you are on an island alone.

My experience includes providing care for individuals with depression & anxiety, trauma, emotional distress and impulsivity, grief, and substance use .
Seeking and engaging in therapy can be a daunting task for most people. Many of us invalidate our problems and fault ourselves for not fixing them or feeling better immediately, yet we are lost in the distress of our issues and symptoms. If this is the case, then I commend you for seeking support! I believe in talk therapy because it provides you the space to find needed perspective on your life, and from there, you can take actionable and brave steps towards healing. My goal as a therapist is to provide you that space, understand your life and the issues that brought you here.

I specialize in men's issues, relationship issues, and couples therapy. "Men's issues" refers to numerous factors that contribute to men's dissatisfaction with life (e.g., work stress and few friends), as well as the consequences (e.g., behaviors that can become excessive and problematic -- substance use , workouts, sex, etc.). I offer a safe environment where you can address difficult issues. I am casual and down-to-earth. My approach is pragmatic and client-centered. (Visit my website to read more about my approach to therapy and to watch video clips from workshops that I've done for mental health professionals.)

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
