I am
polyamory
and kink informed.
There’s more to life than just working and caring for others. You struggled to build this life for yourself, but now there’s little joy in it. You feel disconnected, alone. You yearn to do more than just survive. You want to explore new parts of yourself, deepen your relationships, and find new energy for life. How can you get there when right now your plate is so full you’re barely making it through the day? Things can get better. I will walk with you through this time of awakening and help you refocus on your own needs as you journey toward the life you want. A life full of authenticity and connection.

I also specialize in the areas of spirituality and relationships, including
polyamory
and open relationships.
Welcome, I'm Kaia. I am a queer and nonbinary therapist who offers virtual therapy for individuals and couples using a relational approach incorporating mindfulness and body-based approaches. I integrate a trauma-informed, intersectional feminist, queer and body positive lens in our work together. As a therapist, I am warm and compassionate, providing space for you to feel seen, heard, and understood. I believe that our bodies hold the wisdom and power to heal ourselves; most of us just need guidance to remember how to do that.

Have you sensed that something just isn't right with how you are thinking and react to what life throws at you? Well guess what?! You are NOT the only one. What makes you different from many others? ANSWER: The fact you are here exploring and looking for solutions/clarity. In a world where change, challenges, and unpredictability can be overwhelming, there still lies opportunity. There's opportunity to grow and feel strong, most importantly be healthy. So often we try to take on so much by ourselves, making it much harder on ourselves to get to our desired destination. Together, we can go further, faster.

My practice, You Be You Counseling (YBYC), is centered on the belief that individuals are striving to become the most authentic versions of themselves, and that they are seeking out opportunities to grow. As with any process where change and growth are the intended outcomes, taking the first step can be challenging. However, more often than not, the end result is one in which individuals experience growth toward a more authentic version of themselves.

Whether you've experienced trauma recently or many years ago, these experiences may continue to impact you in the present in various ways. I am the clinical expert but you are the expert of self, as I can not know you better than you know yourself, therefore; collaboratively we will focus on your strengths, explore the patterns that have brought you to where you are today, as well as discuss intentional changes you can make to struggle less and increase your life.

Most people come to therapy for one primary reason: to be heard. I believe that sharing your experience in a safe place and having someone listen - to really hear you - is the most healing thing about the therapeutic process. In the safe space we create together, I will hear you. I will allow you to say out loud anything and everything you’ve been afraid to say before. I will allow you to feel the emotions that you might have felt hesitant to express in the past. I will not judge you or tell you that you are wrong for feeling any of them.

The world is a harsh place, do you agree? Societal, financial, relationships, and other pressures in our lives overwhelms and sometimes consumes us. Finding a positive outlet to discuss the many obstacles that stops us dead in our tracks is important, but some do not know where to start. I would be honored to walk alongside you in your journey. I would assist and support you as you navigate the murky waters of depression, anxiety, oppression, loss of esteem, and guide you to a ray of acceptance, stability, and happiness. We all want happiness, understanding, and acceptance. Let's work together and make it a reality.

I enjoy working with a wide range of adolescents and adults, in particular those in the LGBTQIA community who are seeking to understand and accept themselves. This process involves self-discovery, understanding and self-acceptance. We can work together through issues such as shame, guilt, low self - esteem, school bullying, verbal/physical abuse, discrimination and the lack of family and societal support. We can also navigate possible conflicts of spirituality and personal values with sexual orientation/gender identity.

In my work, I center the voices of those with minoritized/oppressed identities (e.g., Black people, People of Color, LGBTQIA+, trans, gender-expansive people, and people in nontraditional relationship configurations). I have extensive experience working with adults struggling with anxiety, depression, identity exploration (ethnic, racial, gender, and/or sexual identity), intersectionality, PTSD & Trauma, racial & oppression-based traumatic stress, and relationship concerns. I am also comfortable integrating religion/spirituality into our therapeutic work. My therapeutic sweet-spot is working with Q+BIPOC individuals and couples.

Accepting new clients. Welcome! I believe therapy can be a transformative experience, and it requires a lot of courage to take that first step toward healing. I empower clients to live a meaningful and purposeful life, feel a sense of safety in their bodies, and understand their own behavioral and attachment patterns. I am trained in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a values-driven, behavioral therapy that helps us feel more aligned with ourselves in the choices we make. I also draw from attachment theory, internal family systems (IFS), and somatic approaches.

Open Relationships Non-Monogamy Therapists
Why might an individual want to see a therapist specializing in open relationships and consensual non-monogamy?
A client seeking help with an open or consensually non-monogamous relationship will prefer to talk with a professional whom they can count on to be nonjudgmental. Talking with a supportive therapist may on its own help relieve some of the stigma and challenges partners face. That said, the most important factor in the success of any type of therapy is the ability of the client and practitioner to form a strong, trusting bond. For this reason, an individual or couple could find success with a therapist who does not specialize in non-monogamous relationships but with whom they can build trust.
When should open or consensually non-monogamous partners seek counseling?
Like other couples, polyamorous partners typically seek counseling when they face relationship challenges they can’t solve themselves. In non-monogamous relationships, this could include breaches of trust, including infidelity; unclear rules or violations of boundaries; jealousy of outside partners; the stress of juggling the needs of multiple partners; or the effect of high partner turnover on children. Like those of other couples, polyamorous bonds can be threatened by increasingly frequent arguments, poor or dysfunctional communication, diminished emotional or physical intimacy, or the feeling that something is wrong, even if they don’t know what it is.
Do therapists have special training to gain expertise in open relationships and consensual non-monogamy?
No, but individuals seeking help with non-monogamous relationships would most likely consult a licensed professional with specific training in couples counseling or couples therapy. Couples counseling and couples therapy both involve teaching concrete strategies to navigate conflict in relationships. A good therapist can engage both partners as they explain these approaches but can also work with a single partner.
How long does therapy for consensually non-monogamous couples typically last?
Couples therapy for any type of couple, tends to be relatively time-limited, lasting around 12 weeks on average. A good therapist will tailor sessions to the individual partners’ emotions and sometimes their past, along with patterns found to be repeating in the relationship. In many cases, clients should expect their therapist to assign “homework” between weekly sessions.
