You are feeling trapped. Stuck in a seemingly endless loop of unwanted thoughts, fears, or painful memories. You feel like the only way to get relief is to avoid what hurts or do something…anything to quiet the thoughts. Your symptoms have made your life smaller and smaller until you don't even recognize who you are or who you were meant to be. You only see your symptoms.
OCD
, anxiety, depression, substance use, and/or trauma make you feel like you are on an island alone.

Are you struggling with upsetting thoughts, feelings, or bodily sensations? Does your attention get pulled around by this stuff, like a cat chasing a laser pointer? Do you criticize yourself for having these experiences and wonder what they mean about you? I bet you've tried your best to cope - doing whatever you can to think or feel better. Maybe you distract yourself with responsibilities - or lets be real, your phone. Maybe you opt out of doing things and spending time with people - or just go through the motions. Yet, despite your best efforts, you only get temporary relief. And your life has started to feel smaller and smaller.

As a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, I have specialized in treating
OCD
and anxiety disorders for over 30 years. Many people have seen multiple therapists with minimal benefit. Yet the good news is that
OCD
, panic, social anxiety, and generalized anxiety are among the most treatable of all emotional disorders. My confidence in achieving a successful outcome with your problem stems from using what psychologists call "evidence-based strategies of treatment." I primarily use Cognitive-Behavior Therapy, the only form of therapy consistently shown to be effective for these problems in scientific studies.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
OCD is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
