As a psychotherapist in private practice, I specialize in working with couples and
men's issues
. Couples often face a range of challenges that can strain their relationship, including communication breakdowns, unresolved conflicts, intimacy issues, and differing expectations. These difficulties can lead to feelings of frustration, resentment, and a sense of drifting apart. I help couples navigate these obstacles, fostering understanding, improving communication, and rebuilding trust to create a healthier and more fulfilling partnership. In addition to couples, I also work with men, addressing the specific issues they may encounter.

My areas of clinical focus are around
men's issues
and with members of the LGBTQ community. I'm committed to providing a safe and affirming environment where you can process your feelings, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable. I'm not the kind of psychologist who sits silently and nods while you do all the work. I'm an active therapist and work collaboratively to help you increase self-awareness and identify a healthier path. Additionally, I draw on different theoretical approaches to adapt my work to your needs, but work primarily from a relational psychodynamic perspective.

I specialize in
men's issues
, relationship issues, and couples therapy. "
Men's issues
" refers to numerous factors that contribute to men's dissatisfaction with life (e.g., work stress and few friends), as well as the consequences (e.g., behaviors that can become excessive and problematic -- substance use, workouts, sex, etc.). I offer a safe environment where you can address difficult issues. I am casual and down-to-earth. My approach is pragmatic and client-centered. (Visit my website to read more about my approach to therapy and to watch video clips from workshops that I've done for mental health professionals.)

I’ve been in practice for almost 30 years. I work primarily with men in the age range of 25 to 80 generally. Most of my clients have had work success but are not successful or content with their self perception and relationship life. Generally men deal with grief, sadness, feelings of inferiority, depression and anxiety on their own, silently or loudly. Many men are competitive and therefore defended about this part of them. “It”remains hidden to their detriment. I can help you with this malaise. Street drugs, alcohol, impersonal sex, et cetera are not the answer. An external anything does not genuinely resolve an internal issue.

I assist clients through life transitions, especially in the areas of significant loss and career challenges. I hope to provide a caring and therapeutic environment that empowers you to explore yourself and life circumstances in new ways. I strive to help you develop new insights and seek creative solutions to help get “unstuck” wherever you are at in your life. I draw from a diversity of theoretical perspectives to cater the counseling experience to your needs and socio-cultural context (e.g., client-centered, existential, narrative, and cognitive-behavioral). Also, I am an Assistant Professor at University of North Georgia.

It's not easy for men to ask for help. First, we have to admit that what we're doing isn't working and we can't fix it. So, I know it was difficult to begin the process of looking for the right therapist. "Who do I trust?" Will he understand the challenges I'm facing? With my relationship, my anxiety, my stress, my sexuality? With so many risks that come along with asking for help, no wonder men are substantially underserved in mental health - we aren't reaching out.

Stuck? Let's figure out why. Overwhelmed? Let's work to move through the storm. Not feeling heard by your partner? Let's find avenues to open up clear lines of communication. Frustrated in your relationship? Let's identify the areas of opportunity that can re-ignite that spark. Always down? Let's dig past those triggers and discover a way for you to create a journey that inspires you. Anxious? Let's identify the culprit and establish tools that will lead to internal peace. My name is Mark and I would love to get that smile back in your life, that warmth back in your soul, & that peace back in your spirit.

My passion is helping adolescent boys, teens & young adult men as they navigate through challenging periods in their lives. By empowering adolescents, teens & young adult men with the tools and support they need, they are able to get "unstuck" and move forward with more confidence. Many of my clients struggle with their peer relationships and may suffer with social anxiety or low self-esteem, thus avoiding social interactions altogether. In the absence of fulfilling peer relationships, they may develop an over reliance on video games, social media, or other electronics use.

Compassion and collaboration are key elements in growing through any life circumstance. Together, we can build a foundation to move forward with insight, hope, and change. I believe therapy is a collaborative process that brings your unique life circumstances and experiences to a safe and warm environment. While growth and change are a life-long process, each challenge can be addressed within a supportive counseling relationship to bring awareness and change. In working from a client-centered perspective, my goal is to work side by side and help you achieve the life you desire.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
