My areas of clinical focus are around men's issues and with members of the
LGBTQ
community. I'm committed to providing a safe and affirming environment where you can process your feelings, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable. I'm not the kind of psychologist who sits silently and nods while you do all the work. I'm an active therapist and work collaboratively to help you increase self-awareness and identify a healthier path. Additionally, I draw on different theoretical approaches to adapt my work to your needs, but work primarily from a relational psychodynamic perspective.

Sometimes we just need to be heard. My passion lies in sitting with you through your current challenges, centering your lived experiences, and building your toolbox for honoring and moving through your emotions. You deserve kindness, warmth, and a loving relationship with yourself. As a counselor, I acknowledge the way we learn to navigate the world is impacted by the systems we live in and endure, the messaging we receive, and the unique identities we hold and find ourselves growing into. I identify as a
queer
, Puerto Rican/Latinx woman. I also have lived experience with kink, non-monogamy, and alternative spiritualities.

As a
gay
man I strongly support empowerment of women.
I help people who are feeling overwhelmed get back on track. I assist young adults anxious about work or life who need support and tools to move ahead. Clients of all ages may be going through challenges or life transitions - career, divorce, medical issues, retirement - that show up as anxiety or depression or just feeling stuck. We'll explore what's not working and I'll help you make changes so life can be better. If this is your first time working with a psychotherapist, I'll do my best to explain how therapy works. Good counseling is always a collaboration.

I enjoy working with a wide range of adolescents and adults, in particular those in the
LGBTQIA
community who are seeking to understand and accept themselves. This process involves self-discovery, understanding and self-acceptance. We can work together through issues such as shame, guilt, low self - esteem, school bullying, verbal/physical abuse, discrimination and the lack of family and societal support. We can also navigate possible conflicts of spirituality and personal values with sexual orientation/gender identity.

I’m a
gay
therapist who specializes in working with both
LGBTQ
and straight people who want satisfying relationships.
Relationships can be extra complicated for
LGBTQ
people. You may have grown up feeling family, friends, or community didn’t understand you, or maybe you experienced outright rejection. You probably didn’t get to date in high school, and most of us don’t grow up with mentors who can help us navigate the world of dating. Whether you’re having trouble making a relationship work or you’re in a long-term relationship that just doesn’t feel fulfilling, I can help you find or build a strong relationship.

In my work, I center the voices of those with minoritized/oppressed identities (e.g., Black people, People of Color,
LGBTQIA
+,
trans
, gender-expansive people, and people in nontraditional relationship configurations). I have extensive experience working with adults struggling with anxiety, depression, identity exploration (ethnic, racial, gender, and/or sexual identity), intersectionality, PTSD & Trauma, racial & oppression-based traumatic stress, and relationship concerns. I am also comfortable integrating religion/spirituality into our therapeutic work. My therapeutic sweet-spot is working with Q+BIPOC individuals and couples.

Welcome, I'm Kaia. I am a
queer
and nonbinary therapist who offers virtual therapy for individuals and couples using a relational approach incorporating mindfulness and body-based approaches. I integrate a trauma-informed, intersectional feminist,
queer

Aside from my academic training, my psychotherapy approach is also informed by my own
queer
identity, my multicultural immigrant background, holistic spirituality, social justice, and the realities of people of working class and low socio-economic experiences.
Are you feeling depressed? anxious? Perhaps like you are not living to your best potential? As a psychotherapist, I help people create a safe space whereby building a relationship, unraveling issues, demystifying oneself, voicing hopes and dreams, and developing wisdom and insight, one can emerge from (and exist in) the forest that is life with a deeper understanding of how to navigate oneself and the world around us. It is my philosophy that great psychotherapy not only addresses the issues on the table, but also guides one towards greater overall life fulfillment.

I work primarily with
LGBTQ
+ people who have experienced trauma and are looking to improve their lives. This might be wanting to feel less anxious or depressed, have healthier relationships, have a deeper knowledge of yourself, or something else. Trauma can look very different for different people, and in a White supremacist, heteronormative, and transphobic world,
queer
and gender diverse people often experience trauma in unique ways. I use a trauma-informed approach to help
queer
and
trans
clients navigate their mental health, identity development, and relationships.

How can I find a therapist in Atlanta?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
