If you are a client seeking therapy for anxiety, or because of post-traumatic or dissociative symptoms, then I would be a good fit for you. Therapy is a collaborative process where we work together to determine what you need. I used both cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic approaches in therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy addresses changing thoughts and behaviors that could be contributing to symptoms. Psychodynamic therapy explores the origin of symptoms.

In 2012 I began my grad school application essay by saying that it had taken me 62 years to discover what I wanted to be when I grew up. I have now been practicing for about 10 years and I bring to my practice a love for learning and exploring, combined with a steadfast belief in not only the ability, but the right of people to grow and heal.

My name is Maggie and I am so glad you're here. I believe that therapy can be hard AND It is 100% worth your time. Because it is YOUR TIME and You are worth all of the time energy you spend building a life that lights you up inside. The people I am most able to help will sometimes have a hard time believing that anyone has a life that lights them up inside, that it is even possible to be that excited about waking up. Struggles with self-harm, chronic suicidality, self-esteem, depression, and trauma backgrounds...these folks are the folks that will find a willing and capable ally in me. Black and LGBTQIA+ Lives Matter.

People always comment on how intelligent you are, but you feel like an individual who never has there life together. Tasks are piling up at work, your gym membership became a donation to the fitness gods months ago, past traumas are resurfacing, and lately, you’ve been turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms to pacify your depression/anxiety. You go through most of the day thinking, “Is it nap time yet?” The bed beckons like a siren. Every morning, you pull the covers over your head, feeling as if you’re marinating in shame. The little things snowballed into an avalanche, and now you fear you’ll be buried in it.

Complex trauma changes the way our brains work over time. Fortunately, healing does the same thing. By working through how distressing events impacted us, we can create a life where we feel fully alive and can thrive. While I have worked with a variety of different mental health concerns, I specialized in complex trauma and dissociation, neurodivergence and autism in adults, and LGBT issues. I am a nonbinary counselor; my pronouns are they/them. I do not use AI for my sessions in any way. I make this statement in order to offer my clients peace of mind - everything you say in session truly stays in session.

Many of my clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, mood swings, memory lapses, or a sense of losing time. Some are curious about experiences that resemble psychosis or borderline traits, or have been called bipolar. Others notice ADHD or autistic traits and are exploring whether they may be neurodivergent. They may have been given labels that didn’t fully resonate, or had therapy that felt impersonal. They're looking for something more thoughtful and attuned, a place to understand what’s really going on.

As a clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience, I specialize in working with individuals, couples, and families who have been impacted by complex trauma. We are shaped most profoundly by our earliest and closest relationships, and when those relationships have been fraught with chronic adversity – either due to neglect and abuse, or due to unintentional or unavoidable life adversity – we tend to struggle emotionally, behaviorally, and interpersonally with the impact of early life trauma exposure. Treatment is most effective when one is able to find a safe space to identify the root of those struggles.

I've been practicing psychotherapy for 11 years and find that goal-setting and open communication create the warmest therapeutic environments for successful clients! My therapeutic style overall is to provide unconditional positive regard to clients seeking professional support. Solutions-focused, CBT, person-centered, psychodynamic, ACT, and existential are a few common theoretical approaches I practiced to achieve this. Typically, solutions-focused work is completed with adults diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and grief.

Congrats! On taking the first step towards becoming a better version of yourself. I like to think that next to your decision, to engage in therapy, next in importance is who you select as a therapist. My hope is that you find someone that’s dedicated to your growth, well-informed, and compassionate towards your healing and/or improvements. At the end of the day the biggest room any of us will ever step into is the room for improvement. If you're looking for assistance in taking that step, just know, I’m dedicated and ready to assist you.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
