The truth is, you're a total badass who has been pushing through pain and difficulty most of your life. Most people around you don't notice that you’re struggling, because you've been holding it all together so long. But all the struggle and the work to keep it "under wraps" is starting to wear on you. You're tired. You might feel numb and struggle to connect with those you love or feel constantly on-edge or anxious. You may even have flashbacks of your worst moments or developed chronic pain or syndromes. It's starting to feel impossible to keep "holding it all together."

Athletic wellness means so much more than physical training, and I enjoy helping athletes work through anxiety, focus issues, injury/ illness issues, and body image.
I know that it can be really hard to ask for help, especially when you have been a high achiever your whole life. You have had a lot of success, so you probably think, "why can't I fix it myself? Why can't I be perfect?" Whether it’s your health, your work, your eating habits, your relationships, or your feelings about yourself; life isn’t always smooth or easy. Your carefully crafted plans didn't quite work out as hoped. I'm glad you're reaching out. I believe that your emotional well-being is the centerpiece of a healthy life, and that we can work together to help you to get through your challenges and achieve your goals.

If you are living with chronic pain or a chronic illness , you’re probably frustrated by trying to explain the hard parts to other people in your life that just don’t get it, the ones who make you feel like “it’s all in your head”. I’m here to tell you that it’s not in your head…it’s real, and it can have a really big impact on your life. You might miss the way things were before your pain or illness ; you might not even feel like the same person anymore. I know, because I've lived it. The sadness, loneliness, and constant worry that comes along with managing pain and illness is real, but it doesn’t have to be permanent.

Do you live with emotional trauma, physical trauma, chronic illness or chronic pain ? Are you tired of feeling like your life is out of control?
I understand how difficult it can be to live with emotional trauma, physical trauma, chronic illness and chronic pain . Life is not happening the way that you planned. You may be frozen in physical and emotional pain . The pain is not gone even when there is no evidence that it should still be there and you worry how you will show up in your own life if the pain lasts forever. Maybe you can't stop thinking about the thing that happened, no matter how hard you try.

I help people eliminate phobias, unnecessary physical pain and release anxiety. I do this by communicating with the subconscious mind. The conscious mind does not cause panic or any other emotion. People can’t talk their way out of panic attack, pain or anxiety. My interest in the power of the subconscious mind began as a 16-year-old troubled kid. I ran away from home and almost dropped out of school but fortunately I came across a book on the power of the subconscious mind. It changed my life. I managed to finish high school (barely) and continued to college where I majored in Psychology.

“And how do you feel about that!?” ---Says every TV comedy-bit depicting therapy. In reality, it can be intimidating to share our true feelings with another person- especially with a (virtual) stranger. In therapy sessions, I therefore create a warm, safe, empathetic, non-judgmental, space to unpack your story. I view you as an expert on yourself and will encourage you to honor your own inner wisdom. I value processing your unique context and how intersectional identities and structures of oppression contribute to your distress.  My goal is to illuminate the root causes of your pain and to help guide you towards healing and growth.

Anxiety, depression, and chronic illness . The link between stress and physical health is undeniable. And then we stress about being stressed. When you're constantly putting out fires and attending to everyone else's needs, the idea of taking care of yourself can feel like a not-so-funny joke. This level of persistent stress often finds its way into our muscles, bones, and head (i.e. headaches), leaving us not only irritated but also in physical pain . And if you already have some kind of chronic illness , then you know how badly stress impacts you (hello, flare-ups).

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
