Creating the life and relationships you want is not only possible, it can be fun, exciting, healing. Old patterns, beliefs, hurts, traumas don't have to hold you back. As you author your own life and relationships, you can create expansive opportunities and growth free from past patterns, rigid thinking, chaotic interactions, old wounds, childhood abuses, deep traumas or controlling fears and anxieties.

Approach: Psychoanalysis/ Psychodynamic with Humanistic, Jungian, and existential influences.
After 27 years of teaching, I retired from the innovative West Georgia Psychology Department, opening a practice in Atlanta, Georgia. It specializes in intensive psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. My psychotherapy is informed by existential and humanistic training. I trained with the Jungian, Thomas Moore. I have engaged in learning Lacanian psychoanalysis since the 1990's. (Quebec City & New York City) Anyone who finds herself or himself baffled by patterns of unsatisfying behavior, unexplained physical or emotional suffering, or coming to terms with loss, may find my practice helpful. This approach sees a client as a singular person with a history and story, containing truths and possibilities .

I incorporate psychodynamic and relational approaches and very much believe in focusing on the needs of the individual.
Deciding to begin the process of psychotherapy can be daunting as it is the recognition that you want to make changes in your life. The motivation to change might be obvious - there is a specific issue to address - but, sometimes the motivation is not as clear. You want to feel better or have different understandings of why things are and how you can affect the outcome. It is my privilege to accompany you on this expedition. My goal, as a therapist, is to facilitate growth by providing a space that is respectful and empathic, while also providing an opportunity for insight and understanding.

To achieve the client's goals, I utilize principles of brief psychodynamic , interpersonal therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
I adhere to the philosophy that relationships are at the core of the human experience, yet there are times when healing can't be done alone. My work is fundamentally relational. I help people overcome trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues, with an understanding that these issues can overlap or involve additional problems impacting other areas of life. I am warm, relatable, active, and flexible, balancing exploratory work with directness. I have over 15 years of experience with a diverse body of clients. I divide my time between clinical work, teaching, and research.

I completed my training at Michigan, Emory, and Vanderbilt and integrate cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, psychodynamic , and humanistic approaches in therapy.
As your therapist, I would provide a collaborative partnership that allows you to move towards your goals; both support and challenge would be provided to allow opportunities for healing and personal growth. I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship is crucial for psychotherapy to be effective. A strong relationship can allow for self-reflection and a greater understanding of ourselves and our patterns in relationships, helps us manage challenges, nurture feelings of empowerment, allow us to take the risks we want, and afford us opportunities for resiliency and greater life satisfaction. Please call for a free phone consultation.

With your goals in mind, we will collaboratively and flexibly integrate a range of therapeutic interventions, drawing from humanistic, dialectical behavioral, psychodynamic , experiential, emotion-focused, and relational/interpersonal orientations.
If you are experiencing disordered eating, anxiety, depression, or problems related to your substance use, then you may have difficulty seeing a way out. If you have tried to make changes on your own without success, then you are not alone. Many people need therapeutic support to try new coping skills, improve quality of life, achieve a better balance, or sustain long term recovery. For you, asking for help could represent a significant step toward living a better life. If you are willing to take this step, please know that I will do my best to provide a safe, open, accepting and validating space in which you could heal and grow.

My areas of clinical focus are around men's issues and with members of the LGBTQ community. I'm committed to providing a safe and affirming environment where you can process your feelings, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable. I'm not the kind of psychologist who sits silently and nods while you do all the work. I'm an active therapist and work collaboratively to help you increase self-awareness and identify a healthier path. Additionally, I draw on different theoretical approaches to adapt my work to your needs, but work primarily from a relational psychodynamic perspective.

I offer an integrative approach incorporating humanistic, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral theories.
Does it feel like you have outgrown who you used to be? Are you feeling stuck in your thoughts, behaviors or patterns? Do you feel hopeless, lonely, or lost? Are you seeking to know yourself better and live a happier & more fulfilling life? Therapy is a powerful place to explore new ways of understanding ourselves, how we show up in the world and how we relate to ourselves and those around us -- it is a space to pause, focus inward and explore our internal world.

I take a systems approach to therapy drawing upon the psychodynamic model, looking at the whole person or family in their respective stages of psychosocial individual or relational development.
I enjoy working with families, couples, teens, and individuals. I pride myself on my work with clients of color, LBGTQ, women, and other marginalized groups. I also work well with adults and teens on the autism spectrum. I interweave systems models of therapy into my work with not only couples and families but also individuals as our family, our roots, go with us wherever we go. My philosophy is that every human being deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. I offer a low sliding scale fee and file out-of-network for my patients as I work to become fully paneled and in network with major insurances.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Psychodynamic therapy, also known as insight-oriented therapy, evolved from Freudian psychoanalysis. Like adherents of psychoanalysis, psychodynamic therapists believe that bringing the unconscious into conscious awareness promotes insight and resolves conflict. But psychodynamic therapy is briefer and less intensive than psychoanalysis and also focuses on the relationship between the therapist and the client, as a way to learn about how the client relates to everyone in their life.
