I am a Marriage and Family Therapist and Professional Counselor with 30+ years experience in the field (25+ in private practice).
The people who call me for help are real people just like you. You exhaust yourself trying to cope with the stresses and strains of real life. You often feel overburdened, stressed out, and maybe even trapped. You try to stay positive about things, but your resources [emotional and financial] are likely stretched to the breaking point. Your relationships are struggling. It seems that the harder you try to make things work, the worse they seem to get. There's not enough time to do what needs done. Every moment you spend in therapy has to count.

I provide individual/couple/ family and group counseling around those areas.
Many people today face complex problems related to employment, money, tragedy, mental and physical health, relationships, habits and addictions. The inability to cope with these added pressure and stresses of life sometimes interferes with our desire to be happy and live a satisfying life. While some may be able to make the needed adjustments on their own, others may need professional guidance to get their life back on track.

I use a combination of trauma therapy techniques including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), parts language (Internal Family Systems-informed) and somatic techniques in this work.
I believe living in this world can be meaningful, beautiful and also quite painful so I strive to offer the most gentle trauma therapy I can by centering your needs in every moment. When we experience trauma or ongoing painful experiences, it sometimes teaches us to believe something limiting, negative and UNTRUE about ourselves. I want to find out what those beliefs are and what happened to convince you of them. And then you can work toward choosing what you believe, so you can live your life closer to your true values and maybe even start treating yourself with the compassion and kindness you currently reserve for others.

Specialities include advanced training in clinical pastoral education, patient and family counseling from The University of Virginia Health Sciences Center.
We journey, encountering the need for love, belonging, purpose. We meet the challenges of transition and transformation. As therapist I am committed to enrich each client's ability to think creatively, responsibly about his or her own life, and to support the client's vision for change. My goal: to assist the process of self-awareness and clarity; to rename and reconfigure what is significant; and to facilitate the process of creating new solutions of meaning. I perceive life as improvisatory art, more than a linear goal, and I seek to facilitate the client's integration of diverse emotions and experiences into a radiant whole.

Are you experiencing stress or anxiety in your everyday life? Are you going through a major life change or transition, difficult season or experiencing struggle in your relationships? Do you at times question if your life has purpose and meaning, or you do you feel as if you are just “surviving” day to day? If you resonate with any feelings associated with questions like these you are not alone. I believe it is important to consider all aspects of a client’s life including physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.

I work individuals and couples to help build better relationships and coping strategies for times of conflict and change. Having worked for several years with substance abuse groups along with anger management and family violence intervention, I have helped people of all ages to move beyond the negative self talk and low self esteem in order to be successful and thriving in their personal lives and relationships with others. I also offer EMDR to address trauma. Because I believe there is not a single way to deal with life, I like to meet my clients where they are in their own lives and help them to accomplish their personal goals.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
