Doing this type of work, therapy, is truly an honor and privilege. I recognize the deep responsibility of holding space where you can safely explore your most vulnerable moments. My approach is strengths-based and non-judgmental, creating a collaborative environment where we can navigate life’s challenges together. As Ram Dass beautifully put it, “We are all just walking each other home.” I walk alongside my clients with empathy, support, and at times, a gentle nudge to help you move toward the life you want to lead.

You've built a life that looks great on the outside, but inside, is it a different story? Do you feel the impact of old wounds that never fully healed? Do they show up as distance in your relationships, irritability or just an ache that you can't quite name? Have you been told you're “too closed off” or “hard to read”, but the fact is you keep your guard up because letting it down never felt safe? You're not looking for a pep talk or a set of quick tips. You want something real—a chance to dig beneath the surface, to understand why you react the way you do, and to choose connection over protection.

Hello! I'm Kara, a therapist who is passionate about working with anxiety, people-pleasing, body image, depression, and co-dependency. I have over a decade of experience working with behavioral health concerns and substance use disorders. Many of the individuals I work with are seeking changes that allow them to know themselves fully and to live more authentically.
Having invested in my own therapeutic process over the years, I know firsthand how tough it can feel to reach out to a therapist. However, I also know how deeply rewarding and life-changing it is to engage with a supportive, compassionate therapist.

I enjoy working with children, adolescents and adults and helping clients learn how to apply coping skills in day to day life, recognize how past events impact their present emotions, and improve their ability to have successful relationships. Whether this is adjusting to new roles in life, coping with overwhelming anxiety or enduring the stifling impact of traumatic experiences, there is all the aptitude needed to deal with these problems within the client. I can assist the client in developing and strengthening the skills needed to effectively manage their lives.

An inherent promise of the therapeutic relationship is that it offers us the possibility of grace - to be accepted for who we are. This is why I strive in my practice to connect individuals with the "curious paradox" that Carl Rogers spoke of - namely, "when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change." My years in practice have led me to appreciate how the most impactful change in therapy comes not through the exorcising of some fundamental flaw - i.e. "I will love myself only when I am not myself" - but through fostering a more intimate relationship to ourselves, friends, those we call family, and to our communities.

All out of rabbits, all out of hats.
People have always relied on you. You used to be able to magic it all together, sometimes even last minute, and make it look effortless. But then the deadlines got too numerous, the to-do lists too long. It feels like life mutated and you’re struggling to wrap your head around it all.
What changed? Maybe you became a parent. Maybe you never really bounced back after the pandemic. Maybe it’s a midlife crisis. Or maybe it’s not one big thing but dozens of smaller changes that have worn you down. It’s possible you don’t know the reason. What you do know is that you’re burned out.

Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.
How is counseling for elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.
How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.
What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
