Finding the right therapist is a way to practice self advocacy! I value you considering me to meet your needs! I focus on LGBTQIA2S+ populations and those who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depression, cultural traumas, grief, and/or substance (mis)use. I use various therapeutic approaches, including EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness, feminist approaches, and narrative therapies. I value authenticity, autonomy, and vulnerability. I have been in clinical practice since 2020. I believe most humans need counseling, because setting aside time for ourselves in our culture is vital to our bodily and emotional wellness.

You are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. You're going through your day with the constant fear of not being a good enough mom, partner, employee. You feel lost and overwhelmed as you fight to present yourself as someone who has it "all together." Your friends and family don't know how alone you feel because you don't want to be a burden to them. The ghosts of your past torment you, reminding you constantly that if you had been good enough to begin with then you wouldn't have been hurt so badly. It's all your fault, your mind is racing, and you don't know how to make it stop.

*I OFFER EMDR INTENSIVES + WEEKLY SESSIONS* I wonder if you have sought feelings of fulfillment and security through pursuing external goals. If this hasn’t worked, maybe you strive to stay up and out of your pain with distraction or numbing - feeling unsafe in your body or the present moment. Perhaps you work to stay away from the parts of yourself you have learned are ‘bad’ and avoid feelings and memories that are scary and painful. Maybe you strive to feel ok by doing what you’ve learned you’re supposed to do, but rarely what you truly desire. This is not your failure! You’ve done what you needed to survive.

Listen. Learn. Liberate. I believe in having vulnerable, courageous conversations; I care deeply about social justice, spirituality, and whole-health healing. I help my clients to learn more about the origin of certain limiting beliefs about themselves and the world, and how these beliefs inform their current actions and relationships. I am most passionate about relationships (including our relationship with ourselves), and I proudly served many underserved communities, including black and brown communities, the LGBTQ+ population, and the Muslim population. También hablo español! I am not providing in-person sessions at this time.

Life can sometimes seem like just too much. Stressors like relationships, friendships, school, work, and family obligations can become too heavy to bear. Maybe there is a trauma you have carried for years that you still aren't quite sure how to handle. Maybe you are questioning aspects of your identity and you aren't sure where to turn to speak honestly about them. Or, maybe you just need someone to talk to who can help you process your daily life. That's where counseling can come in.

I am currently accepting new clients ready for change! For folks who identify as LGBTQIA+ and/or those with sexual health concerns, finding support can feel particularly challenging. I use an intersectional feminist approach that focuses on strengths and making small, measurable goals for incremental change. Clients willing to read, journal, or listen to podcasts for additional support outside of sessions are also likely to be a good fit. Even if you're not ready for therapy just yet, please check out the resources listed on my website: katyjanousek.com. Emailing me or having a 15 minute video consultation is always free!

I enjoy working with children, adolescents and adults and helping clients learn how to apply coping skills in day to day life, recognize how past events impact their present emotions, and improve their ability to have successful relationships. Whether this is adjusting to new roles in life, coping with overwhelming anxiety or enduring the stifling impact of traumatic experiences, there is all the aptitude needed to deal with these problems within the client. I can assist the client in developing and strengthening the skills needed to effectively manage their lives.

How can I find a therapist in Athens?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
