If you are seeking help virtually with your school age child or adolescent with anxiety or depression I am here to help. I strive to create a safe and nurturing environment in which your child can be supported in their efforts to release, heal and learn new skills. Underlying my work with children is a child centered, gestalt, experiential approach, and CBT. The tools I like to use when in therapy are: play therapy, sand tray play, expressive art, and mindfulness exercises. With teens I use a mandala expressive arts integrating interpersonal neurobiology approach to healing depression, anxiety, and low self esteem.

Contact me for a free consultation if you're ready to banish the fears that are keeping you stuck, diffuse unexpected anger, reduce stress, learn mindfulness or rediscover the qualities you miss in yourself.
Does your world feel upside down and overwhelming? Are you tired of people saying this is your "new normal?" What's taken over? Cancer, parenting, chronic illness, taking care of aging parents, becoming an empty nester? During the day you're distracted and irritable, and you can't remember the last time you slept soundly through the night. The anxiety and worry about what could happen is too loud only drowned out by regret. You spend your days caring for everyone but yourself and wondering what's next for you. Is there anything? Is there more? You stay small and silent, hiding your true feelings to protect those you love.

My treatment mode is to help clients develop inner resources & develop resiliency through guided meditation, mindfulness practice, and reprocessing past trauma.
I have over 25 years working in the field of psychology. I believe that the key to most emotional and psychological problems lies in relationships, those in the past and in the present. I believe conscious and unconscious behavior patterns can cause difficulties in life, and these behavior problems can be changed or modified. My approach is eclectic , and I use various modalities within a psychodynamic framework. I am also trained as a trauma specialist and EMDR therapist. I believe trauma can keep people stuck in behaviors and emotional dysfunction and EMDR is a highly effective way of reprocessing "stuck" trauma.

I use acceptance, mindfulness and self-compassion to help clients heal from trauma and abuse, and I teach positive discipline and emotion coaching.
Life is challenging. We all face times when unwanted or simply unexpected experiences cause us to feel desperate, overwhelmed and alone. A relationship that was a source of support suddenly becomes a source of stress. A loved one becomes ill. A job is lost. A parent dies. A child is born. Our "nest" becomes empty. Memories and fears haunt us. Anxiety and depression interfere with enjoying life. The counseling services I offer can help you to improve your relationships, create healthy family dynamics and make changes that make life better.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
