I used to teach anger management and domestic violence classes for 4 years.
In the first session I would like to get to know them by asking informal questions. Then I ask them about their expectations of therapy and if they had therapy before and how that worked for them! I use active listening positive feedback.

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming. You might be dealing with stress, relationship struggles, past experiences you haven’t fully processed, or carrying something that’s hard to talk about but even harder to ignore. I work with people who want to feel more grounded, more understood, and more in control of their lives. In therapy, I focus on what matters most to you— whether that’s managing anxiety, navigating family issues, healing from trauma, or simply making space to think and breathe. I listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, and work with you to figure out what’s actually helpful.

An ideal client would be an individual seeking a better life and might be unable to connect the dots. This may include recovery from alcohol or drug use with a desire for long term recovery or attributes from growing up in an alcoholic environment. They may be married to an alcoholic. Their relationships have probably suffered and need repairing; they may not know where to start. Life seems overwhelming and even difficult. All that is needed is a desire and some willingness.

Your current life situations do not have to predict your tomorrow. If you are ready to move away from the past I can help. My passion is to help others find freedom from the issues that are causing difficulties and pain. Freedom comes from resolving the issues that are causing the difficulties. Freedom can be found in many forms such as: mending relationships, putting an addiction to rest, developing boundaries, facing depression and anxiety or rebuilding a broken marriage. The road to tomorrow is paved by the work you do today.

What shows up as anger, frustration, or withdrawal is often your nervous system trying to cope with something deeper.
I work with kids (4+), teens, and adults especially those who express what they’re feeling through behaviors and actions rather than words. I specialize in working with children and men to break patterns/cycles, understand feelings/emotions/reactions, and feel more connected and fulfilled.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
