Frances Almstrom
Marriage & Family Therapist, LMFT
People generally seek therapy when they are hurting - emotionally in pain. I believe people reach unendurable levels of emotional pain when they lose the belief and felt sense that they matter to someone else. The symptoms that appear are indications of a rupture in secure attachment. My approach to therapy, therefore, is to work on healing relationship wounds and re-establishing (or sometimes establishing for the first time) a feeling of secure attachment. I use the Emotionally Focused Therapy model (for couples and families) which focuses on the person/relationship and not the diagnosis, and builds safe, secure connection.
Using the Emotionally Focused Therapy model I work with individuals, couples or families to identify patterns of interaction that exist and are not working to support viable relationships. I then work with the client(s) to change these patterns of interacting, to create strong, supportive, secure relationships.
I work from a family systems perspective - we are all formed in relationship to others, initially our families of origin. I am, therefore, very comfortable working with families and with couples, in addition to individuals, and strive to accommodate their unique needs with evening and weekend hours.
