Have you or a member of your family experienced a trauma, suffered a loss or are having trouble overcoming past events? I meet all children, individuals and families where they are. I try to put everyone at ease, answer all your questions and begin to instill hope that the problems will get better. I also have a specialty in forensic psychology and can put my assessment and clinical skills to use in the courtroom to help you achieve justice in the criminal or civil arena.

Visit my website: drbonafina.com Navigating life's obstacles can be overwhelming. People start therapy for different reasons. Sometimes people come in to see me during a period of transition -starting or ending school or work; moving to a new city; beginning or leaving a relationship-. At times, people feel stuck, frustrated, uncertain, or slightly out of step. Maybe you may find yourself hitting the same walls in friendships or relationships repeatedly. Perhaps you feel lost or you long for “something more” but have no clue what’s missing. I will work with you to help you find what you really want and deserve for your life.

I work on problems caused by symptoms or troubling persistent personality traits by helping clients obtain a more complete and honest picture of themselves. The increased self-knowledge and insight achieved within a supportive therapeutic relationship helps my clients make the changes they are seeking. Enhanced relationships, improved confidence, and the elimination of self-defeating behaviors are the product of the continued development and deepening of the therapeutic relationship.

My priority is to provide you with a safe place to bring your truth. Together we will work to create strategies and interventions to ease the challenges you face. I believe that you are the most important person in the room, and should feel heard, felt, and affirmed. For many people long term illness or sudden changes in physical abilities can leave you with a sudden shock of where to go from here? There is the physical work to grow and rebuild, but also the emotional component of grief. Reflecting on past abilities, friendships, romantic relationships, and the anxieties of what the future may hold as you learn a new everyday.

Most psychological issues are related to our identity; growth, change, understanding, acceptance, etc. Whether you're young or old, unconscious attitudes, habitual behaviors, and basic character traits lead to interpersonal 'success' or 'failure'. I can help you to understand these basics. It's up to you to implement the interventions.

Forensic Psychology Therapists

How does forensic psychology work?

Forensic psychology works by providing those in the legal system with expert information about psychology and behavior that they wouldn’t otherwise have. Forensic psychologists do this through a range of services—conducting psychological assessments for court cases, assisting police officers with investigations, providing expert opinion, helping with mediation, and providing mental health care to victims or perpetrators of crimes.

Can a forensic psychologist help with child custody cases?

Yes. In the event that it’s needed, an attorney or judge may appoint a forensic psychologist to provide an assessment and recommendation. This process involves multiple interviews with the child, the parent (or parents), and sometimes others. The psychologist assesses the parent’s mental health, strengths and weaknesses, and parenting practices to understand what’s in the child’s best interest. They then complete a report with recommendations based on their assessment.

Do forensic psychologists help solve crimes?

In some cases they do. For example, criminal profiling involves collaborating with law enforcement officers to construct a profile of a perpetrator based on psychology, personality, and behavior as suggested by the crime in order to focus the investigation. They may also offer expert input on subjects related to a case such as deception, false confessions, and the reliability of testimony based on eyewitness accounts.

How long do people typically work with a forensic psychologist?

The length of time an individual works with a forensic psychologist depends on the relevant service. For example, if a forensic psychologist is conducting a psychological assessment for a court case, this may take one to two sessions to complete (although they can be more extensive). If the forensic psychologist is providing therapy to someone accused or convicted of a crime, treatment may last for several months or more.
