I am a non-judgemental empathic therapist with 20 years of experience working with patients with various issues that impact their ability to be as productive and happy as they would like to be. I use a client -centered approach where I focus on understanding people's strengths and how those strengths can be used more cohesively. I am a very good listener and shy away from giving tons of advice to someone but rather encourage the person I am working with to shape their decision making and life choices. I am also very responsive to a client's concerns .

Brynley believes the most important role of a therapist is as facilitator. In every interaction she is most concerned with creating a safe space for her clients that will allow insight to naturally arise. She believes the relationship between therapist and client is the most important ingredient in a successful treatment. Above all else, Brynley prioritizes connection, curiosity, communication, and empathy.

My approach with individuals and couples is holistic and experiential, rooted in psychodynamic psychotherapy, EFT, and mindfulness. I believe that my role as a therapist is to help clients and couples discover, engage and sometimes confront contradictory or conflicting parts of the self. I believe that this brings about access to the unconscious and a greater understanding of one's wishes, fears, losses, and strengths.

Through both my psychoanalytic training and my training as a creative arts therapist, I treat each person as an individual and we come up with a treatment plan together. My patients are often dealing with depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues, identity formation, trauma, and attachment issues. My view of therapy is a collaborative process where we work together to help you increase your self-esteem, have a greater understanding of yourself, and be able to have healthy and long-lasting friendships and romantic relationships.

We all experience some distress or discomfort that can prevent us from feeling content and enjoying all that life has to offer. We're often stuck in patterned behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and relationships that only increases our distress and prevents us from being able to move forward. I work collaboratively with people to better understand the patterns of behaviors, thoughts, or feelings that contribute to our distress and develop concrete skills to feel content and enjoy life.

My practice is centered around the idea that everyone has a story to tell, and that by sharing and thinking about the constitutive elements of these stories they can reach the understanding of themselves they've been looking for. The goal of therapy is to make the unconscious conscious, as Freud said, and by looking at the narrative of your life we can create a framework for understanding how the issues you face have come about, and how you can address them in order to lead a fuller, more mindful and meaningful life.

At present, I am accepting adult clients only, and provide individual, family, couples and group psychotherapy. As the child of immigrants, I appreciate the challenges of negotiating between different cultures. Some members of immigrant communities are afraid of seeking help for mental illness. They fear being labeled negatively, shunned and stigmatized. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of misinformation about mental illness (e.g. you must be sick, crazy, weak if you seek therapy). Sadly, not enough people seek the help they need and deserve.

Sometimes normal life challenges like changing careers, becoming a parent or changes in relationships can contribute to difficult emotions and result in behavior that make us feel stuck, unproductive or even self-destructive. For many, these experiences also leave us feeling anxious, depressed and sometimes struggling with chronic physical conditions. Exploring how your current challenges relate to your temperament, past experiences and needs can give you the tools to feel better. I can provide the support and guidance needed to help you explore, develop awareness and make informed decisions you can feel confident about.

Sometimes in life, despite our best efforts, we just can't seem to get the relationship, job or sense of contentment that we want. These are the moments when psychotherapy can help us examine our patterns of behavior and figure out what is no longer working for us. I've seen the benefit of this guided self-examination in my own life and enjoy extending the same hope to my clients.

You deserve to live a life that feels joyful and authentic to you. That life can feel difficult to find during periods of transition and new phases. You may be feeling a disconnect between yourself and those around you, or even a disconnect between the life you are leading and the one you want. Do you feel stuck in old patterns that no longer feel helpful? Are the things that used to bring you joy or comfort no longer doing the trick? If this is how you are feeling, you do not need to feel that way alone.

I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with experience treating adolescents and adults in a myriad of settings. In these roles, I've provided individualized therapy to support with relationship, academic, and interpersonal issues, among others. I've also done extensive social justice work with young women. In my practice, the relationship is the main healing agent in a therapeutic dynamic. I've found that clients seek largely to feel seen and heard, and that my role is to co-create a safe space for them to grow. I'm guided by the E. Dickinson quote, "I felt it shelter to speak to you."

Congratulations on taking the first step on your journey towards becoming a better you. Acknowledging the need to change is easy but following through is difficult. Finding the right person to help you through your journey can be draining but important in successfully accomplishing your goals. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable to another person is scary, but it is a strength that aids in the healing process. Humanistic and cognitive behavioral theories are used in an integrative approach to help understand your unique life experiences and how they have led to deficit-based feelings, emotions, and behaviors.

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
