I desire to work with couples who need help communicating, connecting, being intimate, processing emotions together, and need to reconnect. Sue Johnson, The creator of the EFT Model, calls this ‘the dance,’ which means all couples must learn how to do so, but some simply need to learn how to dance again. I enjoy working with teenagers, young adults, and divorced individuals struggling with life changes, grief, parent relationships, ADHD, toxic spirituality , and burnout. My 15 years working in youth ministry have given me a unique perspective on helping anyone in this demographic.

I work with a wide range of issues including addictions (both substance related, and behavioral addictions), relationship struggles, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, grief and loss, spirituality , ADHD, and others.
For many of us, life is often difficult. Whether it's addiction, depression, anxiety, relationships, or just the pain of growing up, there are many different struggles we find ourselves over our lifetime. Counseling is meant to be a place where we are able to walk through the struggles and find both real hope and practical help. I work with adults and adolescents walking through a wide variety of life struggles not just to relieve pain, but to find fulfillment and balance in life as a whole.

In my own journey through anxiety, depression & disordered eating I tried A LOT of things. I thought I could think my way out of my anxiety. I thought maybe I could outsmart it. I thought I could pray my way out, or be religious enough to stop my pain. I thought if I could just figure it all out and name what was going on inside of me then maybe I could finally fix “it.” The thing I didn’t realize was that all of these good, well-intentioned things kept me in my mind. Trying to rationalize and learn my way out of deep pain wasn’t cutting it. In fact, this constant striving and trying harder left me exhausted and discouraged.

I assist people to increase self-esteem and a sense of what's possible, personally and professionally. I also assist people in letting go of bad habits, limiting beliefs and to recover from traumatic types of experiences. This allows for greater motivation to do necessary tasks and important projects. As a person lets go of ideas about themselves that have negatively affected how they feel about themselves and also perceptions of how others felt about them, growth happens in every area of their life. I use a combination of Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming and for those interested, spiritual principles.

Externally, you are accomplished, dependable, and seem to have it all together, but internally, you feel empty, anxious, and alone. Your heart races, thoughts overwhelm your mind, feelings of insecurity hold you captive. You are unsure of your purpose in life. At times, memories of painful life experiences flood your mind, and it feels as though you are reliving the event all over again. Your nervous system feels like a revved engine. Thoughts of the past bombard you, and you are worn out. You desire freedom but are afraid to trust people as you have been deeply hurt. I want you to know there is hope! Life can be different!

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
