In working with
couples
, the primary focus is to develop a better understanding of your partners needs and love language as well as developing and/or building upon effective communication skills.
There is empowerment in knowledge. Once you have the knowledge and develop an understanding, you are empowered to do with it what you will. Positive or negative. Something or nothing. The chose is yours. Knowledge can offer you clarity in seeing patterns never noticed before or in changing patterns you are fully aware of yet need the tools to promote change. My goal is to empower you gain insight and understanding as well as encouraging you as you make positive change in your life.

Often, we seek support simply because we are souls in need of novel ways to protect ourselves in a world that does not always honor the sensitive, unique, or creative. I skillfully and empathically align with such souls. I have decades of experience and proven approaches to empower individuals challenged with anxiety, depression,
relationship
struggles or existential fatigue resulting from being a highly sensitive or creative person who has lacked the necessary collaboration to gain greater self-understanding, expression, and actualization. Together, we can create a life that works for you! Not just surviving, but thriving!

As a marriage and family therapist, I work holistically to address mental health concerns of individuals,
couples
, and families.
There is a quote by J.R.R. Tolkien, "not all those who wander are lost". I think this is a solid descriptor of my life's journey. To the outside observer, I've looked similar to a vagabond as I've "wasted my potential" walking barefoot through Orlando serving the homeless, living in Brazil while working with at-risk children abandoned to the streets, and even more recently as I've dove into therapy with men and women struggling with sexual addiction and the fallout of effects upon their loved ones. I've wrestled with my own struggles and mental health diagnosis of OCD and now have the privilege of serving others.

ADULTS-We have all learned ways to survive this lifetime, including you. I know you are a survivor because you are reading this...but wouldn't life be better if you were thriving? Life can be overwhelming due to past events resurfacing, worry, anger,
relationship
issues, or difficult parent-child interactions. You can continue to survive these events...after all you've gotten this far, or you can learn to address these issues and ultimately thrive. I believe through the course of a positive
relationship
, therapeutic interventions, and a client's self determination, change can occur to help reach your goals.

Are you or a loved one struggling with stress, anxiety or depression? Are your coping skills helping or hurting you? In life, we all experience times when we struggle whether it be with guilt, shame, grief/loss,
relationship
issues or adjustment to change. With a little help, we can move through this and get to a brighter life. In the 20 years I have been a therapist I have helped many people with these issues. One of my favorite quotes is “If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got. If you want something different, do something different.” Counseling is the process that can help with this.

couples
, and adults facing anxiety, depression, grief/loss,
relationship
issues, parenting challenges, life transitions and women's issues.
As a committed Christian, I can tell you that we are not exempt from trouble. Sometimes the troubles and losses we experience can cause anxiety, stress, depression, hopelessness and despair. If you experience these things, the wise and courageous thing to do is to ask for help. My counseling style is supportive and compassionate, yet challenging when necessary. If you choose to work with me, I will integrate our Christian faith and value system along with evidence-based treatment strategies to help you move from hopelessness toward freedom and healing.

I have been a psychotherapist for 35+ years, working with individuals,
couples
and families. Life is a challenge and often presents us with moments that are difficult to handle by ourselves. Seeking counseling is a way of helping us learn how to better understand and cope with those times when we feel stuck. A willingness to reveal our problems, an openness to looking at how we respond to problems and commitment to change are all acts of great courage.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
