Your relationship doesn’t feel the way you wish it did. Yes, you love each other, but it seems like you fight more often than you don’t these days. Neither of you feels like the other is listening, and you then get caught in cycles you can’t seem to break. Maybe it’s big stuff you’re disagreeing about—money, sex, or parenting —or something seemingly trivial that keeps tripping you up. Or perhaps the relationship you’re struggling with isn’t the one with your partner, but a parent or sibling. Whatever it is you’re facing, you both believe reconnection & repair is possible, and you’re ready to get the support you need to do that.

As a parent and psychologist, I understand what a huge step it is to start this process and to trust someone with your child and family.
Does your child or adolescent's worry, anxiety, or sadness get in the way of their day-to-day activities? Does it feel like you're talking in circles and running into the same challenging behaviors over and over? Without a “how-to” guide, it can be exhausting and overwhelming trying to assist your child or teen on your own. Even the process of seeking professional help can be daunting. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. As a Licensed Psychologist, I use a collaborative and strengths-based approach to help children, adolescents, and parents overcome challenges, improve relationships, and experience more joy.

Parenting and caregiving for our children is one of the hardest, yet most important, roles we can have.
I work with clients from birth through adolescence, utilizing a family systems, strengths-based approach. Working from attachment theory, I believe the foundation of a child's well being stems from the caregiver-child relationship. I collaborate with and empower parents by providing them with tools they can use at home, in order for families to reap long term benefits from therapy. I have a wide array of experience working with children exhibiting symptoms related to: trauma, anxiety, anger, transitions, depression, ADHD, developmental delays, and behavioral difficulties.

I am independently licensed as an LMHC in both Rhode Island and Florida. I anticipate accepting an influx of new telehealth clients in either state starting in April 2023 as I complete my move from RI to FL. I will be offering telehealth only to new clients (both states, focusing on ages 14-22) most likely through August or September of 2023. Beginning around October 2023, I will likely offer in-person office options in the Clearwater, FL area. Additionally, I will likely be available to offer school-based in person sessions based upon parent and school approval as early as May of 2023.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
