Does the struggle to manage your emotions get in the way of participating in your life and relationships the way that you want to? It might feel as though you can never live up to the expectations of yourself or the people around you. It’s painful because you long for connection with others and to get through the day without emotions getting in the way but it’s difficult to believe that can happen. You are not alone, many people feel uncertain about their ability to change patterns that get in the way of building satisfying relationships and participating in life the way they want to. Often, these patterns are a result of trauma.

Individuals (18+ years) struggling with depression, anxiety, and/or relationship issues. I'm trained in evidence-based therapies, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which concludes that through mindful meditation, we can defuse ourselves from our thoughts and emotions, allowing us to commit to value-congruent actions in a way that brings us life purpose. I am also passionate about working with couples, helping them navigate through their struggles at any point in their relationship. Lastly, I'm a sex-positive Sex Therapist who welcomes individuals to explore their sexual issues in a safe and non-judgmental setting.

Life can take us to places we don't want to go, and give us an education for which we did not want to pay. I understand this and can help you navigate life's uncertainties. I have assisted clients learn to love themselves, find the resources they need, and heal from the situations life brings to us. I offer a compassionate and non-judgmental safe place to explore, process, and heal. You might not feel like it, but you are stronger than you know. I will be your biggest cheerleader, your advocate, your support in times of stress. I will also challenge the old ways of thinking and doing things.

I would love an opportunity to walk with you through the trials you are facing. You are unique, and should choose someone whose approach and values are a good fit. Your family, friends, and faith can be sources of great support, but also of deep pain at times. The way through may not be easy, but there IS HOPE! When life seems to be falling apart, you need a safe place to share your burdens and find that grace, mercy, and reconciliation are more than just words. I consider my office a "toxic waste dump"... and God recycles!

Sometimes, life challenges can make us feel isolated, overwhelmed, and like no one could possibly understand. If you're experiencing these feelings and finding it harder to cope, I'd love to partner with you in exploring and improving your situation. I'd like to show you that someone can, in fact, understand. My training – in both Counseling (MS & EdS) and Marriage & Family Therapy (PhD) – makes me uniquely qualified to address a myriad of individual and relational issues using evidence-based methods that increase insight and help bring about your desired changes.

Are you tired of feeling as though you are not in charge of what’s happening in your life…that everything that happens is controlled by someone or something else? I’m Dr. Michael Sue Jenefsky, and I am here to help you overcome emotional pain, reclaim your power, and live life on your own terms. After more than 20 years of working to support survivors of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, I’ve discovered that trauma leaves traces that remain long after the first crisis occurs. That’s how it was for me until I found the right help to guide me on my healing journey. I want to be that help for you.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
