Sometimes, life challenges can make us feel isolated, overwhelmed, and like no one could possibly understand. If you're experiencing these feelings and finding it harder to cope, I'd love to partner with you in exploring and improving your situation. I'd like to show you that someone can, in fact, understand. My training – in both Counseling (MS & EdS) and Marriage & Family Therapy (PhD) – makes me uniquely qualified to address a myriad of individual and relational issues. Together, we will use evidence-based methods to increase insight and transform echoes of doubt, pain, and trauma into echoes of resilience and self-worth.

“You don’t have to have it all figured out to move forward. Sometimes healing starts with simply being willing to try.” Hi, I’m Carolyn Allen, LCSW, and I’m so glad you’re here. My ideal client is someone who is high-functioning on the outside but overwhelmed on the inside. They may be struggling with anxiety, stress, life transitions, trauma, relationship challenges, or feeling stuck despite their best efforts. They’re used to carrying a lot—responsibilities, expectations, and emotions—and often feel like they have to “hold it all together” for everyone else. Deep down, they are looking for Personal growth and meaningful change.

Letting go of the past—especially when it involves trauma—is never easy. While it may sound straightforward, healing from painful experiences often requires courage, guidance, and intentional work. In my practice, I support individuals in exploring their past in order to gain insight into how it impacts their present, empowering them to move forward with greater clarity and strength. I also recognize the profound role that faith can play in the healing process. For clients who desire it, I incorporate a faith-based approach, grounded in the belief that God is the source of both healing and hope.

Using EFT and a trauma-informed lens, I help you understand patterns, communicate better, and build healthier connections with others and yourself.
My ideal client is someone who’s tired of carrying everything alone—anxiety that won’t quiet down, old trauma that still shows up, relationship patterns that feel stuck, or emotions that hit out of nowhere. They want clarity, stability, and real connection. They want to feel like themselves again. They’re not looking for perfection—just a safe place to land, make sense of things, & finally move forward with support that feels steady and real.

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
