You may be high-functioning adult who appear to have it together but feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or stuck underneath. Many are navigating life transitions, burnout, relationship stress, or a sense that life no longer feels aligned. You may be used to being the strong one, unsure where to turn for support. Clients come to me when stress builds, emotions feel heavier, or life shifts disrupt their stability. Together, we slow things down, gain clarity, and identify what’s keeping you stuck—so you can move forward feeling more grounded, confident, and in control.

I believe that every person can find solutions to their problems and feel a renewed sense of joy and meaning in their lives. I use many approaches that are tailored to your individual symptoms, needs, and goals. However, the goal is always to improve your life in the here and now, to build the life you want. My clients face problems that appear impossible to overcome or live through, whether it is addiction, personality problems, the impact of trauma, or feeling haunted by and stuck in patterns from the past.

My ideal clients are people who feel like their mental health struggles are tied to their physical and emotional well-being, but they aren't sure where to start. They've likely tried traditional approaches and are still searching for something that feels more holistic. They're ready to make a change and are open to the idea that true healing starts from the inside out. Their issues often show up as anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, and fatigue, leaving them feeling disconnected. They're seeking lasting, sustainable change and the tools and habits to assist them.

You’re the high performer, the fixer, the “strong one.” On the outside, you appear capable, confident, and composed. On the inside, you may feel burnt out, anxious, disconnected, or unsure how to prioritize yourself without guilt. Saying “no” feels difficult. Rest feels unproductive. A one-day Netflix binge turns into an existential crisis. Boundaries feel impossible. You cope by staying busy, people-pleasing, or working towards endless goals. These patterns once helped you survive and feel a sense of belonging, but over time they can lead to chronic overextension, burnout, unfulfillment, and detachment from yourself and others.

Managing one's life and dealing with transitions takes on a whole new meaning in times like these, but can still be effectively accomplished. My diverse practice (teens, adults, professionals, students) allows me to work with varied backgrounds, cultures & education levels. I have had success with treating with stress, anxiety, depression, relationship & family issues through behavioral changes, insight, re-gaining perspective (especially now) & goal adjustments. A strong and effective partnership between therapist and client is still important. I also believe that humor can be a handy secret weapon can be useful.

My clients are longing for a deep and meaningful change (mixed with some play and laughter). I work with children, teens and adults who are looking to create a therapeutic journey that is both playful and deep. The adult clients I work with find real relief from depression, anxiety and trauma. The young adult and teen clients in my office are often working through identity development, stress management, and accomplishing their goals in life. The younger kiddos in my office are using play and creativity to work through big emotions, tough behaviors and family challenges.

Do you feel that, despite your best efforts, something has not gone as well as you had hoped? Are you finding yourself in conflict with a loved one or extended family? Often times, discontentment can brew for months or even years before it is first verbalized. It can be subtle at first, arguing more with a loved one or not even bothering to argue at all. But it often grows, like an emergency siren getting closer. Even when that siren gets unbearably loud, it can still be nerve-wracking to say, "Enough is enough, we need to do something different."

Are you tired of feeling as though you are not in charge of what’s happening in your life…that everything that happens is controlled by someone or something else? I’m Dr. Michael Sue Jenefsky, and I am here to help you overcome emotional pain, reclaim your power, and live life on your own terms. Sometimes, life challenges can make us feel isolated, overwhelmed, and like no one could possibly understand. If you're experiencing these feelings and finding it harder to cope, I'd love to partner with you in exploring and improving your situation. I'd like to show you that someone can, in fact, understand. My training – in both Counseling (MS & EdS) and Marriage & Family Therapy (PhD) – makes me uniquely qualified to address a myriad of individual and relational issues. Together, we will use evidence-based methods to increase insight and transform echoes of doubt, pain, and trauma into echoes of resilience and self-worth.

How do I know if I need career counseling?
Determining whether a career counselor is needed involves assessing one's current career and identifying what changes can be made to improve one's overall quality of life. In particular, feelings of loss of motivation, fatigue, anxiety, depression, procrastination, or ongoing levels of high stress can all be indicative of a need for career-related counseling. In addition, individuals changing jobs may want the decision-making support or self-reflection opportunities provided by a career counselor.

Who can benefit from career counseling?
Anyone can benefit from the self-reflection, skill development, and stress management techniques that career counseling can provide. However, individuals who are feeling overwhelmed or burnt out with their current job and individuals considering a major career change may particularly benefit from career counseling to improve their wellbeing. Additionally, individuals who are facing issues in their current job, such as coworker relationship challenges or not meeting performance goals, may benefit from the perspective that a career counselor can provide. College-age or young professionals may also uniquely benefit from career counseling as they make key decisions surrounding education and job training that will impact their career trajectory.

How long does career counseling typically last?
The length of career counseling can vary greatly depending on the needs of the individual and what type of support they are seeking. Career coaching or advising services—which serve clients in a specific, goal-oriented capacity—often last for a shorter duration and are sometimes only a single session or a few sessions in length. In contrast, career counseling as part of a more integrative therapeutic relationship with a counselor may last longer, particularly if the issues faced by the client are longstanding and/or more complex in nature; in such cases, individuals may expect therapy to last multiple months or longer.

How to prepare for career counseling?
Clients can prepare for career counseling sessions by outlining the specific topics they would like to address with the counselor, such as current job challenges or hopes for the future of their career. Compiling one's thoughts on such topics often requires reflection on one's career and future goals, which in itself can be beneficial for session preparation. Clients may also want to put together a list of questions they would like to ask the counselor, particularly if the career counselor they are seeing has particular expertise in a given career area. Conducting research into potential future jobs, training opportunities, or support resources in one's area may also help clients prepare for career counseling by providing them with a background of what resources are available in their area.
