Many years ago I went through my own personal challenges as a teenager and found myself in the office of a psychotherapist.
I enjoy collaborating with my clients on how they can reach the overall wellness goals. My approach to wellness recovery is direct, supportive and empowering. I help clients develop insight into the changes needed to improve the way they think and feel. My ideal client is someone motivated to make changes but needs direction on how to do so. Many of the people I have worked with have struggled with relationship issues, grief, addiction, depression, anxiety and life transitions.

Anxiety can be crippling, depression debilitating, struggling with your partner painful and lonely, being a teenager or the parent of a teenager overwhelming, and struggling living out your spiritual belief and values confusing.
Life is hard. We all, everyone of us, need help along the way. Perhaps you need help understanding and managing your emotions; overcoming anxiety or depression; building and maintaining healthy boundaries and relationships; healing from past hurts or traumas; dealing with feelings of inadequacy, shame or rejection; forgiving yourself and others. Perhaps you are a parent in need of help understanding and supporting a struggling child; communicating with your teenager or young adult; learning and using skills and tools to navigate these relationships.

There is no worse feeling than seeing someone you care about have trouble making friends, struggling in school, have problems eating, acting out, or being stuck in negative thoughts. Wherever they are, the stress, anxiety, body-shame, sadness or low self-esteem they experience is a pain that affects not only them, but the people that care about them. Despite your best efforts, no amount of talking, reasoning, rationalizing or problem-solving seems to help. Adolescent , teenage, and young adults years should be a time of growth, exploration, transformation and fun, not worry and self-doubt.

Navigating parenthood can be hard & sometimes we need extra support. If you are feeling overwhelmed or watching your child struggle with things such as anxiety, fear, anger, big emotions, tantrums, big transitions, & difficult behaviors, you’ve come to the right place. I work with children of all ages & their grown-ups, utilizing a collaborative play-based approach to healing. I am passionate about family work & utilizing the therapeutic powers of play to help children naturally work through their problems. Play is the “language” in which children communicate in a non-threatening way. Just as adults "talk" it out, children play.

You know that everyone worries, everyone has stress…but how much is too much? Ultimately, you decide what you can handle, but overwhelming worry doesn’t have to be part of your daily life. If you feel “stressed out,” have friends tell you that you’re a “worrier,” or you have fears that are ruining your ability to experience a moment’s rest….therapy can help. I invite you to call me for a free no-strings-attached 15-min phone consult so you can ask questions and get to know me before you decide.

Life can have twists and bumps along the way. As a caring professional working in the behavioral health field for over 15 years I can assist you in the development or refining coping skills so you can continue with quality in activities of daily living. Working with a variety of clients (children, teenagers and adults) I have found that one size does not fit all in behavioral health. I work with my clients to develop a plan that will best suit their needs. It is important that the individual meet their needs. Together we can work as a team to reach your goal.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
