I love working with individuals to remove blocks that are keeping them from living the life they imagined. There is no one size fits all approach to therapy; your story and collection of struggles are unique to you. With every twist and turn of life's happenings come the fear of uncertainty, grieving the loss of what once was, and even the excitement of what's to come.

Sometimes it may feel like we are “just getting by”, seeking a little more direction or self worth, than where we currently stand. We want to feel better especially in the quiet moments. It may look like climbing out of the pit of addiction, or finally putting boundaries on unhealthy relationships or getting personal struggles under control. As a military career veteran, I feel that I can offer a unique perspective and approach to problem solving and goal setting. My experiences have cultivated an insight into human behavior, both in the quiet times and in the height of intensity that few therapist can replicate.

Many times life can be so overwhelming that breathing seems to become a challenge and feeling your heart will burst the new norm. Other times, your thoughts and feelings become so unbearably heavy and painful, completing daily mundane tasks become monumental challenges. Then the feelings of guilt and hopelessness invade you accompanied with their friends, Negative Thoughts. They become intrusive, setting up camp in your mind, and drowning you with sadness, anger, frustration, dread, helplessness, worry or any combination of these. These thoughts and feelings are real and sometimes even visceral, yet they don't have to paralyze you.

I hold a warm and non-judgmental space while we move towards your goals together. My approach to treatment involves us reflecting on how your life experiences and environments have contributed to your emotional, behavioral, and psychological responses. From there, we can learn what works for you, what doesn't, and what you want to change. My perspective is informed by cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy, which means we have multiple pathways for creating your treatment roadmap.

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists

How does cognitive processing therapy work?

A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?

CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?

A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
